Hi guys. I visited the ancient city of Perge and Kursunlu waterfalls yesterday. The biggest difference of Perge from the ancient cities (Myra, Andriake and Phaselis) that I mentioned in my previous posts is that it was a magnificent Pamphylia city in its time. Others were Lycian cities. Of course, that's not the only difference. It is known that there was a very unique sculpture school in Perge during the Romans. Therefore, many magnificent works of art were found during the excavations here. Today, most of the ancient sculptures of Perge are exhibited in the Antalya Archeology Museum so that they are not affected by weather conditions and natural disasters. It might be a good idea to visit the museum after visiting the ancient city of Perge. After the ancient city tour, I also stopped by the museum and took photos of some sculptures to share with you.

Also, after Perge, I visited another wonderful place - Kursunlu waterfall. There is not much distance between them, so once you come to one, the other one can be visited.

Do you remember the Trojan Wars? While some of the Achaeans who won the war returned to their homeland after the war, some of them visited various cities in Asia Minor. It was known that Perge was founded by the Achaeans who came here until recently. In some inscriptions found in the excavations in the city, the names of 7 Achaean founders are mentioned.

Later research revealed another truth. The history of the city actually dates back to the Bronze Age. The name of Perge was mentioned on a bronze plate found in Hattusa, another ancient settlement. And then it was determined that there were people living in ancient times in the acropolis built on high hills. It is known that Perge embraced various civilizations after its establishment. During the Persian invasions that swept the whole world, Persians, then Alexander the Great, and later Pergamon kings and Roman emperors ruled in the city. Sculptures and structures that have survived to the present day mostly belong to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. All the works are quite impressive.

Plancia Magna is a woman who was born and raised in Perge and devoted her life to this city. That's why she is one of the first names that come to mind when Perge is mentioned. Magna is the daughter of a very powerful and wealthy family. Her father is a Roman senator and her mother is the daughter of a king. As we know, a patriarchal order was dominant in the cities under the auspices of the Roman Empire. The women stayed at home and did not interfere in the affairs of the state. However, Plancia Magna paid little attention to this order. She was determined to spend all his wealth on the welfare and development of Perge. She was generous, intelligent and very beautiful. The people loved her very much. It is understood from the inscriptions found in Perge that the people gave Plancia Magna the title of "daughter of the city". She was so important in the life of the city that when talking about her father and brother, they were called Plancia Magna's father or brother. Instead of hiding behind her wealthy family, she wrote her name in history with golden letters. It's impossible not to be a fan.

Perge was not a city by the sea. However, it was located on the banks of the Kestros river (today's name Aksu) and thus almost turned into an important port city. In addition, the city was located on the trade route from Bergama to Side. So its location was strategic in every sense. Therefore, it attracted the attention of kings and emperors.

Like other ancient cities in the vicinity, this is one of the cities conquered by Alexander the Great. However, there is no mention of any war in history. In my previous posts, I wrote that Alexander the Great loved Phaselis very much and spent a winter there. While he was still in Phaselis, Perge ambassadors reached him and started negotiations. It is known that he came to Perge afterwards and captured it without a war. As I said in my previous posts, I think this is one of the most distinctive features that distinguishes Pamphyllians from Lycians. While the Lycians are fearless warriors, the Pamphyllians are more of a peace-loving people.

This Alexander the Great statue exhibited in the Antalya museum is one of the sculptures found in Perge.

One of the important names mentioned here after Alexander, as in other cities, is emperor Adrian (Hadrianus). There is a gate built in his honor in Perge. Since I have mentioned his name frequently in my previous posts, I will not mention it too much this time. Septimius Severus is one of the emperors who has an important place in the history of Perge. A square and a fountain were built in his honor in Perge. The statue in this fountain is exhibited in the Antalya museum.

This ancient theater is one of the best preserved structures. Unlike other theaters, the protection walls between the audience seats and the stage attract attention. These were probably added to the theater to protect the audience during gladiator and wild animal fights, which were very popular at that time.

The stage is very beautiful and impressive. There are many relief sculptures here. These depict the life of Dionysus, the god of wine. Because the reliefs were so high, it was very difficult to understand their contents. However, after I took the photos, I had the opportunity to examine the details. I felt like I was watching a movie. They are amazing.

As I learned from the plate that I came across while walking around, this plant grows only in Perge in the world. This endemic plant, which grows in rocky areas, blooms between March and June. (If you remember, we encountered another endemic plant in Phaselis - Phaselis vetchling was also the plant of that city)

This tower wall welcomes us at the entrance to Perge. Normally, there should have been towers on both sides of the entrance to the city. But obviously one is destroyed and the other is partially standing. When we pass by the tower, we come across the Southern Basilica. This is one of the buildings from the period when Christianity started to replace the polytheistic religion. In fact, Perge was one of the important cities for Christians. It is known that St. Paul came to Perge by ship over the Kestros river and went to other cities from there. On the way back, he preached here and then went to Antalya.

After the basilica, there is the area where the aqueducts are located. Many fountains and aqueducts were built here in order to meet the water needs of the city. Also, another very impressive issue is that there is a sewage system in the city for the removal of waste.

Perge's agora is very, very impressive. Its streets are columnar and its places are mosaics. All of the shops have two doors, one opens to the street and the other to the agora. Some shops have two floors. This marble slab I came across has a relief of a fish. It was probably a fishing shop.

Many ruins continue to be found here and are being restored as they are found. Restoration of columns is very laborious and costly. Metal rods are added to the found columns, and they are lifted with the help of a crane and placed in the column slots. These operations are much more difficult than building structures from scratch. Some people sponsor these restoration efforts, and small plaques with the names of the sponsors are placed at the bottom of the pillars.

There is a tholos section in the middle of the Agora. This place served as a temple. During the Byzantines, this place was used as a holy spring.

One of the most impressive structures of the city is the Roman gate, which has been preserved until today. This gate reminds me a bit of the three gates in the center of Antalya. Perge gate also has three gates. The reliefs are beautiful.

There are two baths in Perge, southern and northern. Many rooms were built inside these baths; There are locker rooms, cold pools and hot sections. The heating system is underfloor heating, as in Turkish baths. The columns are also wonderful.

This monumental gate is located in the transition section of the bath. In the Roman period, such doors were made in front of important buildings.

The museum has a small cafe and a section where souvenirs are sold. What impressed me the most was the copy of this Haseki sultan series from the Ottoman period. The original is exhibited in Istanbul Topkapi Palace.

One of the beautiful cacti I came across while walking around Perge. When I first saw the cactus, I said"No, I definitely won't touch it!", but after the second and third cacti I lost my strength to resist. Nobody collects them here. Because they know what will happen to them. Cactus fruits are covered with tiny invisible spines and it takes great courage to touch them with bare hands.

The 43-degree heat and thirst eventually overpowered me, and I reached out and plucked one of the fruits. Of course, what happened next happened. Even though I was very careful, 2-3 thorns stuck in my hand. Who loves the cactus fruit should put up with its thorns. Its taste is very good.

Next up is the Perge stadium, one of the best preserved ancient stadiums. Unlike the theatre, this is a long elliptical structure. And the audience parts are also very high. It is very clear that wild animal fights, which were very popular at that time, were also held here. And also, as it is understood from the sources, the Olympics were held here and olive tree wreaths were placed on the winner's head. Olive was also a very popular plant at that time.

After the stadium, I left Perge and set out for Kursunlu waterfall. There was a beautiful village on my way. Here I came across many greenhouses, fruit and vegetable trees. Local people are engaged in agriculture. The fertile lands of Pamphylia continue to be the source of livelihood of the people living on it from past to present.

I have included my waterfall trips in my previous posts. Kursunlu is a natural wonder located approximately 7 km from the ancient city of Perge. This place emerged as a result of the ponds in the region naturally forming a waterfall. Since the waterfall water is more in the winter months, these places are more beautiful on cold months. Kursunlu waterfall is a wonderful place in the greenery.

It is very difficult to understand how this sculpture was made with the technology of that time. The dancer's flying, possibly silk, clothes are lifelike.
