My Buyer Persona: The Sexalescents

A few days ago I was talking to a friend and she told me that she felt that since her retirement, more than ten years ago, she had been wasting her time, not that she did nothing with her life, because she had dedicated herself with fervor to her home, but she was referring to the productive work, that which motivates you every day in a task, that leaves you money and that you know that you are contributing something valuable to the world.

This conversation left me thinking about my target audience. When I started my personal growth venture, based on coaching, I was very clear about who my product was aimed at, that huge age group of women who are over fifty years old, who are retired or very close to this condition, also included those who had devoted much of their lives to housework and that having raised their children and that these had "made their life", I wanted to venture into something new and different, rescue youthful dreams and bring them to reality.

Based on my personal experience and the environment where I interacted, I had enough elements to consider that this is a group of people with very clear specific needs and that for various reasons they feel excluded from opportunities. In addition, I researched statistical data to support my idea, concluding that there was a wide target audience with these common needs and that I could contribute to their growth.

With these ideas in mind I built my first buyer persona, a fundamental tool that allows us to know and understand more about our ideal client, a construction of that fictitious person where we highlight their motivations, needs, their disposition and buying habits. The result was something similar to this.

Already with a prepared offer of workshops, coaching, conversations, defined objectives and a detailed action plan, I set up what would be my advertising campaign. From the beginning, I considered it a success, since I was getting clients for the two proposed workshops, people for the coaching and I already had an acceptable audience for the first conversation.

However, there was a big detail, there were no women in the groups, there were men and women between 26 and 40 years old, to be honest there was only one lady of 53 years old. Something had gone wrong, the message did not reach who it was supposed to reach, but it had reached a segment I had not foreseen, so I did not analyze the failure, I went ahead with my proposal.

I made certain modifications to my content to better adjust it to the target I had captured, and I forgot who I really wanted to address my proposal to.

Approximately six years have passed since that moment and talking to my friend I realize that this audience, to which I belong, is there in many ways unattended because socially, and traditionally it has been considered "out of action" and as nothing is casual, these days my husband told me about a term I did not know "los sexalescentes".

Yes, something like teenagers, but who are already over 60 years old, curiosity set in and I began to investigate this new concept that groups us together and to which they are given some characterizations that we must pay attention to, among them: that we are very motivated people, we set ourselves new learning challenges and we like to channel, in this new stage, our work and productive activities for what we dreamed of being and doing one day.

It seems to me that this is a good time to return to my original project, this time defining my buyer persona more precisely and focusing my marketing strategies in a clearer and more direct way.

Today I invite you to talk about this topic: What is your buyer persona; has your buyer persona responded positively to your proposed marketing strategy or has the trend led you to redesign it; what do you suggest to be more accurate and reach the people we really want to reach? We read you.
