I never understood how someone can promise to stay forever and then become a memory. Because I did believe you. I believed you when you made me feel like I had found a safe place. I believed you when we talked about the future as if nothing could break us. I believed you when you told me you wouldn't let me go. And perhaps that was my mistake: trusting so much. Because while I was building a life around us, you were learning how to live without me.
The most painful part wasn't that you left. The most painful part was discovering that I was still fighting for something that you had let go of a long time ago. And it hurts to admit it, because no one wants to accept that they were giving everything for someone who was no longer giving the same back.
Sometimes I think about the last version of me that was happy with you. Not the one who cried at night. Not the one who checked her phone waiting for a message. Not the one who wondered what she was doing wrong. I’m talking about that person who still felt loved. I miss her more than I miss you. Because I lost a part of myself that never was the same again.
