Greeting from the Caribbean. I'm from Cuba, the country who is also called as the island frozen in time, the one with hundreds if not thousands of classic cars that look like they just rolled off American factories.
Sometimes, it can be difficult to feel like a tourist in your own city, but, since I've been spending most of my time at the hospital lately, I haven't had a chance to visit some parts of my city. However, recently I had the opportunity to visit a particular place and it was such an incredible experience that I felt like a tourist all over again. I felt like a child in front of a candy store 馃槄
As I was saying, my country is a walking museum, you can see classic cars everywhere, but, let me take you on a quick tour of Havana's Automobile Museum, also known as "The Garage", because if you're ever traveling to Cuba, you absolutely must visit this spot
The museum has a long history that dates back to the 80s. It all started with an idea from Dr. Eusebio Leal (the former historian of the city) who, in his love for history, rescued a series of cars that were going to be auctioned off. Since then, the collection has grown with interesting pieces: such as cars from the British ambassadors on the island, donations made by Fidel Castro himself, and I won't spoil any more surprises in Liketu you have more... Keep reading, so you don麓t miss any detail...
The Automobile Museum has shifted around like a car itself, and it's now located in the heart of Old Havana, at San Ignacio, between Amargura y Teniente Rey. The place had been somewhat neglected and had fallen into deplorable conditions. However, in 2019, in collaboration with the Saudi Fund for Development, renovation works began, which were completed in 2021 (amid the COVID-19 pandemic). And that's where the incredible part comes in: in its new state, the museum has only been open for 2 years.
In my opinion, it's the most amazing museum in Havana. It's the only one I highly recommend visiting if you're strolling around the streets of the Historic Center.
The collection is made up of vehicles mostly manufactured in the 20th century in the United States, with a few from European makers. Interestingly, over 90% of the collection actually drove on Cuban streets at some point or served the country, making them a living piece of history.
The museum is divided into four rooms or pavilions labeled A-D. Unfortunately, the vehicles are not arranged in any logical historical order. Instead appear to be exhited randomly. That does not detract from the experience. You can travel back in time to 1989 England, or go even further back to 1918 United States when Henry Ford was starting to build his empire. You can also transport yourself to the tumultuous Havana of 1957. It's a wild, historical journey packed into just a few meters that麓s definetely worth experiencing.
The Pavilion A may be the smallest, but it holds the largest number of cars. Here you'll find perhaps the most varied representation of cars, ranging from American manufacturers like Ford and Chevrolet to European makers like Jaguar and VW.
One of the most surprising pieces in this room is possibly the only cab in Cuba, a typical English taxi in the middle of the Caribbean. I was amazed to see it there!

Additionally, on display is the VW Beetle that the famous writer Alejo Carpentier used during his time in Paris, wich was the main reason for my visit to the museum
The Garage is a place of incredible mystique. Within its walls, lies an immense history of automobiles that's truly awe-inspiring. But, as you move among the rooms, you'll notice a representation of classic gas pumps. Being a Cuban myself, I had only seen these pumps in Route 66 movies or in the Cars movie in Radiator Springs. Just pause for a moment in front of the Ford T (1914) or the Republic (1914), and you can almost feel the rich history that these veterans hold. It's truly amazing to see these vehicles up close and appreciate the craftsmanship and innovation that went into creating them.
I'm sure that due to their high historical value, they must be worth a fortune. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience this incredible collection, and I hope that others can experience it too.
Pavilion B
As we move on to Pavilion B, you'll be greeted by a wall that provides a brief but detailed summary of the history of automobiles in Cuba. (I'll share some excerpts with you below.) Pavilion B is more dedicated to the Cuban history, and in this room, you'll be able to see a range of fascinating cars.
Perhaps the most incredible exhibit for me was the Rolls Royce Phantom (1925), which is possibly the only one of its kind on the island. Seeing this stunning vehicle up close is a truly unforgettable experience.
Rolls Royce Phantom (1925)
After recovering from the excitement of seeing the Rolls Royce, it's time to climb a small staircase to reach Pavilion C, the haven for motorcycle enthusiasts. Here, you'll find three beautiful Harley Davidsons from different years and models on display. Alongside these beasts, you'll also discover a curious Ducati Desmo (1977) and a classic Puma SS 200 (1963). On the wall of this room, you'll find a series of photographs that each capture a piece of the history of automobiles in Cuba. It's a fascinating collection that offers a unique window into the past. Whether you're a motorcycle enthusiast or simply curious about the history of automobiles, Pavilion C is a must-visit spot in the museum.
Harleys Davidson Model: E (knucklehead)
And now, there's only one room left to see: Pavilion D. Unfortunately, during my visit, this room was closed for repairs to the crown jewel of the collection: a Desoto Custom Convertible Coupe (1949), which our guide described as a miracle. He told us that the car had been completely restored and that it currently has all of its original and functional parts, including its folding roof, which is a real standout feature. If you have the chance to visit and see it on display, please send me some pictures!
Pavilion D
That way concludes our visit to the amazing temple of cars in Havana. In just a few meters, you'll discover an incredible journey through the history of automobiles that will leave you feeling amazed and inspired. if you're planning a trip to Havana, don't forget to add the Automobile Museum to your itinerary! I love this weekend experience I hope you did it, too.
Until next time!
Oh, I forget it, if you're a true car enthusiast, make sure you follow me so you don't miss out on any of the incredible stories and content that I'll be sharing about these classic cars.
See U soon
PS: I don't want you to miss out on any of the fascinating stories behind these vehicles. To truly appreciate the rich history of the cars, I will be creating a series of posts because it麓s too much to cover in one post. I invite you to join me on this journey! So, please stay tuned...
SPANISH
Si vienes a Cuba, a帽谩delo a tu lista de visita.
As铆 que son historia viva.
El pabell贸n A, quiz谩s no sea el m谩s grande o si?
No necesita subt铆tulos 馃槄
Harleys Davidson Model: E (knucklehead)
Ahora si, nos leemos m谩s pronto de lo que crees馃槈馃憢
