Alright, this is apparent I know, but no one really thinks of the implications of getting lost. What does that even mean? How do you get lost exactly? Where should you get lost?
You see we often get stuck in a cycle of life where we are always surrounded by common places and people. We often even bring familiar people with us when we explore an unknown area or go out to meet people with different viewpoints and beliefs. To fully get lost one must do it alone. One must embrace the uncomfortable and the unknown. You must take the risk of getting harmed physically, emotionally and mentally. You must be prepared to be lost to let go of expectations of both yourself and those unfamiliar people around you.
Yes, I'm telling you to step into that dark alleyway. To go mingle with those mean looking bikers. You never know what you'll find there and that is exactly the point. You must enter into a space both physically and mentally unknow to you. You must go so far down that path that you don't recognize anything or anyone around you. You must get to a point where you don't even recognize yourself. At that point, you will discover the true nature of you.
This is you unfiltered, unencumbered, unhinged and free self. Where nothing is familiar except the feeling inside your heart and the light inside your soul. That is you! That is who you are and what you want to be.
Here is my story of getting lost:
March 11, 2016
This day was the 17th anniversary of meeting my lovely, smart and beautiful wife. Everything in my life revolved around our family. She was the yin to my yang and I couldn't be happier. It came as a shock when I realized I was holding tight to my children and screaming at her to reconsider. To look at what this was doing to our family. My head was spinning. I had no idea what to do. This was the first step to losing the person I was. To let go of comfort. The reason behind her throwing me out was just two people growing into something different that was no longer functioning properly. We had argued a lot as of late and the stress brought us here. After a year I would look back at this time as my birth.
After a month of deep depression and sleepless nights. I was advised by my therapist that I may need to numb with the amount of stress I was dealing with. I drank and released. I cried so much that evening with my brothers. I also found that I was attracted to someone that I never felt attracted to before. I realized that I was ready to date. That I was interested in finding new love.
Dating was strange, to say the least. I had never dated as an adult and this is step two to getting lost. I had to let go of my preconceived notions of what women wanted and even what women are. I only had the example of my former wife. I actually enjoyed dating. Getting to hear stories and getting to understand these women on a deep level. This was new to me. Getting to know strangers in an intimate way. I spoke more openly and freely with everyone I came into contact with. I wanted to understand others and I was genuinely interested in what they had to say.
There was one amazing lady that I took to a Rave. This was my first rave and she had never been either. What I discovered there was beyond anything I had ever discovered. All these people showing Love. Living in Peace. Finding Unity in their differences. They showed Respect for each other's journeys. My heart had found a home and this was step three of losing the person I use to be. I dabbled in dressing up in ways I have never thought I would. Wearing tutus and glittering my beard. Actually, before this, I often didn't have a full beard. Freely expressing my heart to complete strangers. I allowed my hair to grow and with it the love of people I will never see again. This was the first discovery of me. The part of me that wanted to be free and to love everyone. To show that love without fear.
My company had fallen apart along with me. Leading me to start networking. I wanted to make my life about raving and the community within those raves. I started to make business plans to shed light on this culture and the beauty I had found within it. That is when I met my mentor and guide. She was brilliant and naturally gifted in connecting people. She took me in and showed me where my mind belonged. Amongst the free-thinking world of the entrepreneur. Joining her group was step four in getting lost and step two of who I was. My mind had found a home with these inspired women and men. Their goals in life were to make the world better and they asked for nothing from me. They taught me so much and I discovered that I was intelligent. That I was also gifted and that those gifts had been wasted in my past life.
After about a year of dating, I met someone that stole me away. Everything just clicked. Neither of us wanted anything serious, but it turned out we were perfect for each other. I had found that last part of me I was missing. We moved in together and are now building a new life. If past me and I met we would not understand each other at all. I had lost everything, been stripped down to my core, found a new way of life and opened my mind to all possibilities. I am now changed and I know better what I value and how I want to impact this world around me. Getting lost was both the hardest and best thing I've ever done.
Now go get lost, but remember is not going to be easy. It will only be worth it.
I Love You All
