On the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga you have all the comforts of modern life where you can enjoy your holiday visit and not waste time eating and still enjoy the sea, architecture or its culture. But there are also places where time is not the most important thing. The most important thing is the moment and the family. The after-dinner chats and the warmth of a hot meal in winter.

The Costa del Sol is protected from the winter weather by a mountain range with small villages connected by narrow winding roads. In the middle of one of these roads is Venta Victoria. Its dishes are prepared over a slow fire, where its specialities are cooked with local produce. Pulses, vegetables, game meats, cheeses and cured meats with wines from Casares, the village where the road ends and where this restaurant is located.

It is as old as the road itself. From the times when carts were pulled by horses or oxen. When it took hours, not minutes, to reach it from the coast. At that time stopping and eating here was a necessity, now it is a luxury.

Frequented by foreign families who know the best places and neighbours of the village, we sat right next to the fireplace. The venta has several rooms on different floors. It also has a glazed porch at the entrance with beautiful views of the mountains and a backyard where the chickens roam free.

A tagarninas stew. This is a wild plant that grows here, similar to a thistle. Once the thorns have been removed, its stalk is eaten along with other vegetables and pork and beef.

And to finish off the first courses, the typical tripe with chickpeas and black pudding. I have to confess that I took a couple of spoonfuls before photographing them.
