Have you ever played a MOBA, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game?
I played one before, and it was DOTA, or Defense of the Ancients. So when I recently discovered Mobile Legends, the game immediately felt familiar. The basic idea is similar: two teams battle across lanes, defeat enemy heroes, destroy towers, and eventually take down the opposing base.
However, the biggest difference I noticed is simplicity.
DOTA can be very complex. There are many heroes, items, mechanics, and strategies to understand, and it is mainly played on a desktop computer. Mobile Legends feels like a more accessible and modern version of that experience. It can be played on a phone, which means you can enjoy a match almost anywhere and anytime, as long as you have a stable internet connection.
I only started playing three days ago, but I’m already enjoying it a lot. Most of the players I have encountered appear to be from Southeast Asia, which is not surprising because the game seems extremely popular in this region. What amazes me is how quickly a match can connect people from different countries through one common goal: winning as a team.
During these first three days, I have mostly used Layla.
Layla is one of the most basic heroes in Mobile Legends. She is also among the first heroes introduced to new players, so there is no mystery surrounding her. Most experienced players already know her strengths, weaknesses, attack range, and usual playstyle.
That can make using her risky.
The enemy already knows that Layla is weak during the early game and does not have the best escape ability. If an assassin or melee hero gets close enough, she can be eliminated quickly. Because of that, positioning is everything.
Still, I like using her because she is easy to understand and very effective once she gains enough gold, experience, and damage-focused items.
My strategy is simple. During the early game, I stay at a safe distance and avoid unnecessary fights. I usually go to the Gold Lane so I can earn more gold and purchase items that increase her damage and attack speed. I focus on clearing minions, protecting the lane, and avoiding aggressive enemies.
Once Layla becomes properly equipped, the entire match changes.
Her long attack range allows her to damage enemies while staying behind her teammates. She can eliminate enemy heroes, destroy towers quickly, defend the base, and pressure the opposing team from a safer position. Her passive also rewards distance, so keeping enemies far away makes her attacks stronger.
My latest battle was probably my best one so far.
Our team won with a final score of 46–6, and I finished with 11 kills, zero deaths, and 10 assists. I was also able to deal heavy damage to enemy heroes and towers while participating in many team fights.
What made me happiest was not simply getting kills. It was surviving the entire match without dying. With Layla, that tells me my positioning worked. I stayed behind the frontline, attacked from a distance, and joined fights only when the situation was favorable.
Of course, my teammates also played a major role. A marksman cannot dominate alone. Layla becomes far more effective when tanks and fighters create space, protect the backline, and stop enemies from reaching her.
So far, I have played around 30 matches using this approach. I won 29 and lost only once. I know this winning rate may become harder to maintain as I face stronger players, but for now, it shows that a simple hero can still be effective when used with discipline.
Layla may be considered a beginner hero, but basic does not mean weak. In the right position, with the right items and good support from the team, she can become one of the most dangerous damage dealers on the battlefield.
