My Grandfather and Father purchased this John Deere model A new in 1951. Last year Dad sold his farm and purchased a small house in town. So with no place to park his beloved John Deere he gave it to me with the stipulation that I wouldn't sell it at least as long as he is living. That made me the third generation owner. I have a little farm so he can come out anytime and drive it around the pasture. The engine was rebuilt in the mid 1980's and Dad did some repainting on it in the 90's. That's why the John Deere decals are missing. He just never bothered to replace them.
I remember in the last 1950's and early 1960's when I got home from school, I would go down to the field get on the tractor and plow until Dad got home from his day job. He would then plow until late into the night trying to get the corn crop planted. Times were hard back then for the small farmer. Corn seed and fertilizer were expensive but livestock prices were low. Of course there was always the threat of to little or to much rain. We were always praying for what ever we needed at the time. One time as a little boy I went with Dad to our neighbor who had a farm next to ours and Dad ask him if he could borrow $50 until we had some livestock ready to sell. We needed the money so we could buy some things at the store that we needed. I always thought we were doing ok until I heard my Dad ask for the money and then I began to worry. All worked out over the years as hard work and thrift paid off.
Anyway that's my story of the old tractor. I hope to start restoring soon.
