Picking up my phone yesterday evening, I decided to go on my regular internet surfing, something caught my attention and I believe it's fair to share it with the community.
Imagine you were able to correct the albinism in your family's traits without having to spend much, and with certainty that it has been cured, same for baldness, some blindness and other DNA related disorders. I know by now, you would be imagining how that is possible. Think about you having to edit the gene of your own future offsprings to possess and hide some traits that are dangerous and uncomfortable. I can sense someone thinking "this is only science fiction", but it's here already.
What's this all about?
A biochemist at the University of California, with help from other scientist have been able to bring to existence the CRISPR gene editing technology. How did this come about? By observation and other scientific methods Doudna was able to work on the DNA of a certain bacteria which finally lead to CRISPR being admitted as the world's most accessible gene editing technology.
However, more intellectual energy is being put into using this phenomenon to correct genetic disorders like cancer, Sickle cell anemia and some blindness, this holds a very promising opportunity for alot to happen.
The But
This innovations are promising, but then considering the fact that the word editing doesn't only imply removing the bad and putting the good, it could also mean replacing with worse and probably worst. Now from my knowledge this is a cheap and simple scientific phenomenon, hence, what happens when it gets into the wrong hands . I leave the answer to the authorities.
But I believe we are getting closer to something, I hope it doesn't also add to human extinction.
