Currently if the whole planet started to use Bitcoin it would cause something similar to denial of service attack.
This would bring the network to a screeching halt do to its incapability of handling transactions. One of the answers to this is the Lighting Network that is designed to run on top of the Bitcoin network.
Channels handle transactions on the Lightning Network with lower fees than on the main chain. Channels are powered by the amount of Bitcoin that is locked within it.
The more Bitcoin that is locked within the channel the more transactions it will be able to handle.
Currently the combined amount of Bitcoin locked in channels is valued at 2.9 Million dollars at the time of writing.
This is a significant amount of Bitcoins that are not in circulation which may help Bitcoin retain its value.
The Lightning Network has increased the speed of transactions for its currents users do it is not clear that it will be able to process transactions from the entire worlds population.
To be able to process planetary transactions it would likely require a significant amounts of channels being available and integrated into user friendly wallets.
With a population of over 7 billion the Bitcoin Lightning Network would be facing one of its greatest challenges yet.
There are some wallets that have incorporated the Lightning Network that are currently available such as Spark Wallet that can be downloaded for phones.
