Almalaguês is a small town in the district of Coimbra with around three thousand inhabitants, known for its weavers who make carpets and embroideries that are highly prized internationally.
Along with bedspreads and tablecloths, these carpets are made on looms identical to Persian looms, the result of Arab influence in the region.
On a recent work visit, I saw two street art pieces by the same artist a few meters apart that caught my eye. A resident of the village explained to me that they are a tribute to two master weavers, the most influential in the art of carpet making - Inês Fonseca and Carmina Rosado. She also told me that there are more interventions about weaving in other streets in the village. They belong to the initiative “Por terras de Almaki, contigo ao postigo” [Eng: In the land of Almaki, with you at the wicket], organized by the ADCA (Almalaguês Sports and Cultural Association).
So as not to make this post too long, I'm going to share these two weavers today and, in a future post, the rest of the street art around the village.

**As tecedeiras de Almalaguês **
Almalaguês é uma pequena povoação do distrito de Coimbra com cerca de três mil habitantes, conhecida pelas tecedeiras que fazem tapetes e bordados muito apreciados internacionalmente.

Juntamente com colchas e atoalhados, esses tapetes são feitos em teares idênticos aos persas, resultado da influência árabe na região.

Numa recente visita de trabalho vi, a poucos metros uma da outra, duas intervenções de street art da mesma artista que me prenderam a atenção. Um habitante da aldeia explicou-me que são um tributo a duas mestras tecedeiras, as mais influentes na arte de fazer tapetes - Inês Fonseca e Carmina Rosado. Explicou-me também que existem mais intervenções sobre a tecelagem noutras ruas da aldeia. Pertencem à iniciativa “Por terras de Almaki, contigo ao postigo”, organizada pela ADCA (Associação Desportiva e Cultural de Almalaguês).
