That is some project @solominer but I think you can also use charcoals because they also retain moisture rather than the porous rocks that you just have to slave around crushing them.
My sister also collected cactuses which she had put neatly at the wall of their house, now that area of the backyard is just beautified because of the displayed cactuses. :D
