🔍 The opening frame (what it's about)
How far are you willing to go to be "normal"? That is the disturbing question posed by The Conformist. The film immediately immerses us in post-war Paris: in a hotel room bathed in the red light of a neon sign, Marcello Clerici waits in the darkness for a call that will change his destiny, oblivious to his wife's sleep.
This tense opening is only the gateway to a psychological labyrinth set in fascist Italy. Marcello is not a textbook villain, but a mediocre man, terrified by his own past and blinded by the desire to lead a bourgeois and "respectable" life. Alternating between the present and the ghosts of his childhood, the film dissects with a firm pulse how cowardice and the need to fit in can turn an ordinary citizen into the perfect piece of a totalitarian machinery.

🎥 The reason to turn off your phone and look at the screen
In The Conformist, the image is never casual; it is formulated from cinematography, and the play of lights articulates a narrative as powerful as the dialogue itself. Suspense here is not built with chases, but with glances, silences, and a strange feeling of rootlessness. It is a cinema that demands complicity and an attentive gaze. It is not enough to follow the plot; you have to let yourself be caught by every frame.

💡 What everyone overlooked
Adapted from Alberto Moravia's novel (1951), The Conformist is the fruit of an ambitious co-production between Italy, France, and Germany (formerly West Germany at the time). With a budget of barely 750,000 dollars, Bertolucci (screenplay and direction) achieved a visual miracle supported by a luxury team: the cinematography of Vittorio Storaro, the design of Ferdinando Scarfiotti, and the music of Georges Delerue.
Costume design was handled by Gitt Magrini, who devised neat and conventional suits so that Marcello could camouflage himself among the bourgeoisie; Anna breaks the mold with bold prints and silhouettes, and Giulia embodies conventional femininity.
The interiors (furniture, lamps, and curtains) do not seek historical realism, but a studio-film stylization, and seem to respond to the same logic as the architecture, to reflect the artificiality of Marcello's life.
Jean-Louis Trintignant did not speak fluent Italian, so he had to learn his lines phonetically and was dubbed in the studio by Sergio Graziani. The structure of temporal jumps was not in the script, but was born on the editing table alongside Franco Arcalli. And the cinephile nods? In a telephone scene, Jean-Luc Godard's number appears and reference is made to Le Petit Soldat, an intimate homage from Bertolucci to his great idol.

💬 Is it worth the ticket? (Opinion)
Visually dazzling and emotionally you can freeze in an image, that is how The Conformist presents itself, a work where the camera and cinematography clearly reinforce the characters, giving them character, minimizing them, placing them with mysterious auras. Its strength does not lie in empathy, but in the precision with which it develops what it frames, illuminates, and organizes in space. A hypnotic formal intelligence that, paradoxically, keeps the viewer at a calculated distance.
It is not a film that seeks immediate complicity. Its slow pace and deliberate coldness make the visual ideas sparkle more strongly than the emotion of the dialogue, which may distance those who prefer more conventional cinema.
However, when the work connects, it leaves a lasting impression. A film, in short, for those who observe cinema as an exercise in contemplation, reflection of context, the director's vision, and analysis; this is not one to let yourself be carried away by.
