| Hello, friends! For the past two years, around mid-June, my friends and I had already been opening the mushroom season in the Staryi Sambir district at our trusted spots. By "opening the season," I mean a real harvest — we used to find plenty of porcini mushrooms, the most desirable and delicious ones in our region. But this year, it seems things didn’t go according to plan. Two weeks ago, we returned to the same place and found almost nothing. And by “nothing,” I mean a literally empty forest — no porcini, birch boletes, slippery jacks, russulas, or aspen mushrooms — not a single edible mushroom. Only here and there were a few tiny chanterelles, far too small to pick. Even poisonous mushrooms were nearly absent — no red or gray amanitas. | Привіт, друзі! Минулих два роки приблизно в середині червня ми з друзями вже відкривали грибний сезон у Старосамбірському районі — на наших перевірених грибних місцях. Під "відкриттям сезону" я маю на увазі справжній урожай: тоді ми знаходили багато білих грибів — найжаданіших і найсмачніших у наших краях. Та цього року, здається, щось пішло не за планом. Два тижні тому ми знову вирушили в те саме місце — й не знайшли майже нічого. І під "нічого" я маю на увазі буквально порожній ліс: жодних білих, підберезників, маслюків, сироїжок, підосичників — жодного їстівного гриба. Лише де-не-де вилазили дрібні лисички, ще зовсім крихітні — надто малі, щоб їх збирати. Навіть отруйних грибів майже не було — ані мухоморів червоних, ані сірих. |

| Still, a few intriguing "forest surprises" did make it into the frame, and those are exactly what I’d like to share with you today. For example, we often came across bright yellow patches in the forest that stood out sharply against the green moss. These were slime molds — mysterious organisms that exist on the boundary between fungi, animals, and plants. One of them, as identified by Google Lens, was Fuligo septica, also known as the yellow slime mold. | And in the next photo — a mystery. On a tree stump, I found a fungus that looked like an elongated chestnut or an unusually large corn kernel: just as hard, but dark in color. I picked it and found it was very dense, not yielding at all under my fingers. Google Lens was no help. Maybe one of you will recognize it? | А от на наступному фото — загадка. | Another find was an organism that looked like a multinucleated amoeba. Google Lens suggested the name Brefeldia maxima, a relative of slime molds. It might not be an entirely accurate identification, but the resemblance is truly striking. | |

| I also captured a photo of Ramaria formosa — a coral-like fungus. It usually appears in large numbers in that area, but this time there was noticeably less of it. | And finally — one more attempt at identification. I found a dried, shriveled mushroom. If you imagine it “alive” and full of moisture, it might have been a Lactarius resimus, commonly known as the milk-white brittlegill. But that’s just a guess, since such mushrooms do grow in that area. | Наостанок — ще одна спроба визначення. Знайшов висушений, зморщений гриб. | So, the trip wasn’t very successful in terms of mushroom harvesting — not a single edible mushroom made it into my bucket. But as an outing for a “mushroom photographer” and explorer, it was quite rewarding. Nature is never empty if you walk into the forest with eyes open to beauty.
