Quick Escape out of Mardin

Route: Mardin to Diyarbakır, TURKEY
Distance: 95 km
Time: 10am - 5pm

Rain rain go away

We've been stuck in Mardin for 4 days and the rain wouldn't stop. Constantly watching the forecast, we decided today is the best chance we'll get to move on to the next city. On our way out of the city we sticked to the main road so we didn't get lost. For the first time in a long time, we had a cycle lane! Painted blue to match our rain jackets.

2-to-1 Lane

It's been very common to see the road modified throughout eastern Turkey. They do this near security/police buildings. One reason could be for heightened security as exploding cars are a real threat here. The blockades at massive, 1x1 metres concrete blocks, to stop any dangerous cars getting close to the military/security buildings.

Lunch Time

We found a nice bus stop off the road to make lunch. It was perfect. The ground is very wet due to the recent heavy rain, so we cannot picnic.

Greener on this side

The road to Diyarbakır is very green. Much of the route was flat and there was a lot of agriculture. The road quality is also very good today, mostly double lane and a nice wide shoulder for two cyclists!

Welcome to Diyarbakır

Also known for being an important Kurdish city, it's Kurdish name is Amed. Many Kurdish friend told us to visit so here we are!!! The population is 1 million and altitude is 670 meters. We have about a week stay here because tomorrow the forecast isn't good for at least 5 days. Fingers crossed we aren't stuck here for too long.
