Ever since I remember myself, I always loved History and as the time passed on and the more I delved into it — the more I increased my passion for it.
But as I was speaking throughout my life with pretty many people about this topic, I met some of them stating they like it too, others presented neutrality and others even stating that they actually resent it, explaining their point of view.
I want in this article to exhibit my stand point and compare it with other people’s and see what conclusion we might arrive at at the end. And even though I might be biased, I will try nonetheless to take in consideration all the opinions that differ from mine and include them in a rationale constructed on as much doze of objectivism as I possibly can.
First off, I would like to categorize based on a few critical parameters:
(1) Importance
== Some people, including me, say it’s very important. We believe it plays a significant role in understanding why the things and events around us are the way they are and that they have direct derivation from the past, which is made available to us through History. We also believe it’s crucial to analyze History as thorough as possible in order to predict the future as accurately as possible, since in our mind is clearly established that History has a very accentuated tendency to repeat itself.
== Some people say it’s somewhat important. They consider the History having only a moderate extent of importance over our faculty of perceiving the things and events surrounding us. They admit that one should study and analyze some particularities brought by History in order to have a chance at analyzing the present and predict the future to a certain degree, but in the same time they consider that just a superficial studying of it is pretty sufficient since, at the end of the day, it can’t provide us with an absolute direct indication.
== Some people say it’s irrelevant. They claim the History doesn’t carry any valid hint or information whatsoever regarding conveying any usefulness or having the ability to shed light on any current or potential future unfolding of the circumstances.
(2) Validity
== Some people, including me, say it’s valid in most cases. We realize that even though initially the History is usually written by the winners, the truth can’t be concealed forever and eventually it comes to light; therefore we attribute validity to the History.
== Some people say is somewhat valid. They tend to believe it’s kind of 50/50 and can’t be entirely be proven to be 100% real.
== Some people say it’s invalid. They submit to the idea that the whole History is hoax and myth and it has the properties of only entertaining us, and not actually deliver any genuine informative material.
(3) Interest
== Some people, including me, say is absolutely, mind boggling, interesting. We find History to be extremely captivating and are fascinated by every event explored. We also see the deep meaning and the subtle message that it forwards to us. We see in it a means to travel in time. We feel it as an vehicle that facilitates our journey through the humankind’s past, making our interaction with it more tangible and colorful.
== Some people say it’s somewhat interesting. They see some interest in it, but not too much.
== Some people say it’s not interesting at all. They assert that the History is monotonous and boring.
I see the above mentioned parameters as being some of the, if not the most crucial ones which define how History is accepted, assimilated and interpreted by different people in different environments at different points in time.
In my 27 years spent on this Earth so far, I’ve met a good number of people to be predisposed to like History, even if some of them didn’t even possess too much knowledge about it. But sadly, the vast majority that I had to deal with — don’t like it at all.
Obviously, there are many reasons why some would not like History, and among them are:
== It’s way too big and is impossible to comprise it all.
== It’s way to ambiguous: there are many versions of the same event, instead of being only one so you know for sure what’s the truth.
These are the 2 most frequent excuses that I hear when people try to explain me why they don’t even consider trying to like History, and my perspective on them are as follows:
== It’s way too big and is impossible to comprise it all.—>While this is discouraging them, to me, it gives even more passion and zeal; on contrary, I would be extremely discouraged and devastated if the domain of History would be all of a sudden shrank and would be nothing else too much left to be explored anymore, whereas everything would be already decoded and known.
== It’s way to ambiguous: there are many versions of the same event, instead of being only one so you know for sure what’s the truth.—>I actually quite like that a lot of times, if not in the majority of them, History can’t come up ultimately with the final version to present an established undeniable truth. If this would have been the case, it would have been millions times more boring and it would constitute a static discipline. But thanks God it isn’t, on contrary, is very dynamic and offers you with many possible scenarios so you have the opportunity to engage and develop your brain in solving the puzzle according to your own filter of knowledge and sometimes it gets even to such an interesting phase, that you might need to engage and trust your instincts to be able to form a particular image about a certain event. I think it’s perfectly fine and wonderfully designed to serve us in our voyage through time as a compass instead of GPS.
That’s my general position about this complex subject. And yes, I try to understand where the people are coming from and why would they like or not something, and that’s ok with me since this makes our society more diverse and ultimately interesting. But one thing I know for certain: I like History a lot and my brain just can’t stop being astonished and enchanted by the infinite stream of vivid knowledge that the History perpetually throws in my direction.
