Never heard of any of these incidents besides the latest Ledger one and yes knowing of these will influence you on your final selection when it is time to purchase a cold wallet.
Crime over time has changed with bank robberies a thing of the past as everything has moved online. The average local branch does not hold that much cash like they used to and even banks in South Africa have done away with the double door bullet proof entry system. I am sure these types of crimes still happen, but it is far easier to sit outside the bank maybe in another country and hack into the system. Digging tunnels and using get away cars is no longer necessary. I am sure we have all dreamed about robbing a bank (maybe just me), but the real money is through robbing the systems where you physically do not carry bags of bank notes.
I saw this yesterday with regard to how many incidents there have been with regard to crypto hardware wallets. I have not really looked into what cold wallets are out there and knew of Ledger, Trezor and Tangem. I have had a Trezor before and that is my number one preferred option right now and will be buying one from Trezor.
The problem is the distribution and the registered sellers especially if those are compromised like they are with Ledger. This is a security weakness in the way their products are distributed and not in the actual hardware/device itself. The supply chain and the way the product is packaged is where the security risks lie and you would of thought this would have been priority number one especially for what they are dealing with.
A tamper proof factory seal should have been on this device from day one and I am no fan of having resellers when one could be purchasing directly from the supplier. These days this type of product with the logistics networks it can be delivered world wide within 3 days at a minimum cost. Ledger could have three hubs with one being in North America, South East Asia and the other one in Europe.
Just a quick search tells you they have sold over 8 million Ledger crypto wallets across 200 countries and "secure" roughly 20% of all crypto assets so the company has a huge responsibility. the problem is not with the product, but more so the people they have allowed to handle their product which is super dumb because this is an easy fix, but their name has already been tarnished.
A crooked mind will find a way only if you allow it to happen and Ledger has been slack allowing this breach of security to happen. Always expect the unexpected and keep the distribution in house for these types of items as allowing third party resellers leaves the product in someone else's possession.
With these types of products you get one chance and if you mess up like ledger has then the trust is broken and people will move on. Crypto is still in the infancy stage as we have not had mass adoption yet so one can imagine how much is going to be stored on these devices in the future and this needs to be secure.
Trezor was not hacked, but had their data exposed by revealing names of customers purchasing their hard ware wallets. Brevo being Trezor's email provider was breached allowing phishing emails to be sent warning of a security risk to those customers. This is still opening your customers to risk by not having the best security possible especially when you are dealing with a security product.
Security breaches are all too common these days and should be a priority of the companies providing these services. My car hire company in Portugal informed me a few months ago that they had a data breach and my personal information was part of the leak. There was no banking details, but the information stolen is your personal information and I will be not using this company ever again.
Bidvest Bank and Perig Green Capital had a data compromise earlier this year where twelve tera bites of clients data was stolen including bank account numbers and identity numbers and documents. These clients have invested millions in the care of these investment houses and again this was a third party breach. Not enough is being done to secure the safety of clients funds and data which is the worrying part when AI can be used by those with bad intentions and we are all aware of quantum computing that is coming so what people think is safe is never safe.
Your data is now a valuable item and why we have data centers popping up everywhere. Most of peoples data is already out there with most people belonging to Facebook so the damage is already done.
