Cryptocurrencies and blockchain are two very hot topics in some parts of the online communities. However, there is not a whole lot talked about in a mainstream way other than perhaps bitcoin. Even when you hear most people outside of the cryptocurrency circles talk about bitcoin, there is still an air of confusion about its success, purpose and how it works and differs from a normal currency. There is a very good reason for this and to illustrate it, I will go over the current crypto currency market versus the world markets.
As of this post, the total market cap for Cryptocurrencies sits slightly above 173 billion dollars. That's a huge number, right? Well that number is relative. When it is compared to the total world stock market cap of roughly 70 trillion dollars, it is quite light. Even if it is compared to the total amount of freely accessible money, 28.6 trillion, it is still a small fraction (the number values were pulled from Market Watch).
Let's put these numbers in perspective. The current market cap for cryptocurrency is 0.604 % of the total freely available money in the world and 0.25% of the total market cap of the world. Looking at these numbers, it should be obvious that cryptocurrency is currently just scratching the surface of its potential market.
Conclusion
If cryptocurrency is something that is going to do what it is setting out to do and decentralize currency, eliminate middle men, make transaction between individuals in different part of the worlds quick and seemless and provide a more stable form of currency, then we are still in the infancy. Anyone that invests in cryptocurrency right now would still be considered an early adopter and should see this market, as well as their investment, grow wildly.
