Cody Wilson, who founded Defense Distributed, came to everyone’s attention in 2013 when he published CAD files on the internet which would allow for the 3D printing of a pistol, which he demonstrated would work with a 3D printer bought from eBay.
This film traces his life from 2012 till 2016 during which time the storm that arose from his work had been ongoing, with prosecutions and civil rights actions being taken out, and defense being made on account of the second amendment to the American constitution.
The film is divided into chapters, and also punctuated by years, and as a backdrop shows the continuing outbreak of gun violence aimed at schoolchildren and minorities which is so common in the States, and which is one of the main reasons behind attempted gun control legistration.
The film also looks at the edgy friendship between Cody and the British-born anarchist Amir Taaki, and their work on the Dark Wallet for bitcoin, which was advertised as being suitable for money laundering. Amir went on to fight alongside Kurds in Rojava in Syria, and served in the YPG military.
The film is well presented, with good graphics, and an interesting and developing storyline that showcases Cody’s ideas as well as following his life and struggles with the law, and is an insight into a libertarian’s thoughts and actions. The film ends before the sexual assault charges which led to his resignation from DD.
