Martisor is the name for the red and white string with hanging tassel customarily given on the 1st day of March. Giving this to people is an old custom, and it is believed that the wearer will be strong and healthy for the year to come. It is also a symbol of the coming spring. So, a day to look forward to tomorrow, but caused chaos here in Bucharest today. I had meetings being cancelled as the traffic was so bad, as Romanians were shopping last minute to buy their Martisors for tomorrow. The sight of the little flower sellers on the street corners at the moment, along with the gentle rise in temperatures certainly makes it feel like spring is in the air.
