He was born on 19 February 1630 AD. He ascended the Maratha throne at the age of 44 and was one of the great kings of India. Shivaji is a figure who represents courage, freedom, and the fight for independence. The holiday was first celebrated by Lokmanya Tilak in Pune in 1895.
