The past handful of days my life can summed up in one word: lychees!
I pick them. Eat them. Sell some. Give more away. Repeat.
The taste is rather unique...definitely sweet, but also definitely tangy. Some people say they have a licorice hint as well and I'd kind of agree a little bit to that. It's fun to watch people try them for the first time. Even though it's usually an adult doing the tasting, it's like watching a small child try a new food. Those faces that are made! 😀
Sometimes they're called "lychee nuts." Well, evidently they're poisonous, so I hear. So, spit 'em out, which is also fun. I always assumed the reason for being called nuts was because of the seed inside and how it looks like a nut. Just now, I read that lychees are often allowed to dry and brown on the outside (I never let them get that far, I just eat 'em.) And, the fleshy fruit is allowed to dry into a dried fruit "nut", I guess like a raisin...hence the name. This is what I learned today. :)
Climbing the tree is fun...some boyhood joys never go away. It's also a bit scary. I fashion a rope harness and literally tie myself to the tree when up high.
Lychee season is over for me now...I simply can't pick them all. So...
enjoy!
