Pilgrimage, San Lázaro ,Babalu Ayé. [Eng-Esp] --- Monomad---
Every December 17 in the Havana town of Rincón, San Lázaro, Babalu Ayé in the Afro-Cuban religion, is celebrated. Since the day before, believers from many parts of the country and even Cubans traveling from abroad visit the sanctuary to wait for 12 AM and celebrate this deity.
Pay promises or ask, it is common to hear that "San Lázaro is not asked for money, San Lázaro is asked for health and spiritual well-being" among some people that I was able to interview when, as part of my scholarship with the Witness agency, I documented the past 16 and December 17 these events.
At times it could be shocking what we can observe, a large number of people asking, some on their feet, others dragging themselves for a better future. Today I will only show a small selection, which is why I would like to show much more in future posts so that everyone can see what I saw through my camera's viewfinder.
Cada 17 de diciembre en el poblado habanero del Rincón se celebra a San Lázaro , Babalu Ayé en la religión afrocubana. Desde el día antes personas creyentes de muchísimas partes del país e incluso cubanos que viajan desde el exterior visitan el santuario para esperar a las 12 AM y celebrar a esta deidad.
Pagar promesas o pedir , es común escuchar que "A San Lázaro no se le pide dinero , a San Lázaro se le pide salud y bienestar espiritual" entre algunas personas que pude entrevistar cuando cómo parte de mi beca con la agencia Witness documenté el pasado 16 y 17 de diciembre estos acontecimientos.
Por momentos pudiera ser impactante lo que podemos observar, una gran cantidad de personas pidiendo , algunos de pies otros arrastrándose por un mejor futuro . Hoy solo mostraré una pequeña selección por lo cual me gustaría en próximas publicaciones mostrar mucho más para que todos puedan ver lo que yo ví a través del visor de mi cámara.
Close to the door of the sanctuary they receive the pilgrims, they have time for everyone, they gave us their blessing and listened carefully and without any distinction, for them we are all equal and deserve the same love and respect.
The road that we can see ahead is the one that takes us from the head of the town 5 kilometers away to the church. (Those 5 kilometers have to be walked, the entrance of motorcycles or cars is not allowed during that day)
Cercano a la puerta del santuario reciben a los peregrinos, tienen tiempo para todos , nos daban su bendición y escuchaban atentamente y sin distinción alguna, para ellos todos somos iguales y merecemos el mismo amor y respeto.
La carretera que podemos ver por delante es la que nos lleva desde la cabecera del pueblo a 5 kilómetros de distancia hasta la iglesia. ( Esos 5 kilómetros tienen que ser caminados , no se permite la entrada de motos o carros durante ese día)
People paying promises, many of them had been crawling a long distance, some asking for the health of their children or relatives, others paying the promise to the request fulfilled. For some it is their first year, for others it means continuing to keep their word.
Personas pagando promesas , muchos de ellos llevaban muchísima distancia arrastrándose , algunos pidiendo por la salud de sus hijos o familiares otros pagando la promesa a la petición cumplida . Para algunos es su primer año , para otros significa seguir cumpliendo con su palabra.

At night we can see many people around her selling religious items and flowers. This has already become part of the festivities of San Lázaro, it is already something common to be able to buy Flowers to offer in this same place, without necessarily having to bring them in advance.

Faces of despair I could give this image a title, emotions, love in the look, sadness. Many ways to call it. This was already late at night after sundown. I was right in front of all the people who were entering the sanctuary. Right ahead of the story.

A man with his purple candle (color that represents San Lázaro) approaches us, this image was close to 12 at night. We can see how part of the melted candle is reaching his hands.
Un hombre con su vela de color morado ( color que representa a San Lázaro) se acerca a nosotros, esta imágen fué cercana a las 12 de la noche . Podemos observar cómo parte de la vela derretida está llegando a sus manos.
A mother and her little son wrapped up on the ground waiting for the birthday of San Lázaro, although it cannot be seen around these people, many others were walking.
Una madre y su pequeño hijo abrigados en el suelo esperando el cumpleaños de San Lázaro , aunque no se puede observar alrededor de estas personas estaban caminando otras muchas .
One of my favorite images, a group from the Red Cross accompanies a person who was in the place so that she could finish with her promise, at no time did they prevent her from reaching the place, on the contrary, they took care of her and separated everyone in the path.
This young woman apparently was not feeling very well, I used this photographic technique to try to show the movement of the person that she could observe.
Una de mis imágenes favoritas , un grupo de la cruz roja acompaña a una persona que se encontraba en el lugar a qué pudiera terminar con su promesa , en ningún momento le empidieron llegar al lugar, todo lo contrario la cuidaron y apartaron a todos en el camino.
Esta joven al parecer no se encontraba muy bien , utilicé esta técnica fotográfica para intentar mostrar el movimiento de la persona que podía observar.

La partida , el final de la peregrinación, un niño junto a su madre de salida , el niño se da vuelta y yo lo fotografío . No sé a diferencia de otras personas con las que pude conversar y preguntar , el nombre y el porqué de su presencia, lo que sé es que después cambié la vista y al mirar en esa dirección de nuevo ya no se encontraban .
All the images were taken with a Canon 5d mark 2 camera and a 50mm 1.8 lens, I would have preferred a slightly larger width, for example a 28mm or 35mm lens and thus be able to cover much more, but I don't have them .
The lighting is completely natural and the one that could take advantage of the public lighting, in short, very bad lighting, for which the iso sensitivity had to be increased to levels that I neither like nor am used to using.
Of course, the most important thing is to take the photo, with the conditions and the equipment you have. But even more important of all is being able to connect with people.
For some it may be a great leap of faith, for others a display of religious fanaticism. I am not here nor was I there to judge anyone but I think that after seeing these and other scenes I am a better photographer and a better person.

Todas las imágenes fueron realizadas con una cámara fotográfica Canon 5d mark 2 y un lente 50 mm 1.8 , hubiera preferido una amplitud un poco más grande, por ejemplo un lente 28 mm o 35 mm y así poder abarcar mucho más ,pero no dispongo de ellos.
La iluminación es completamente natural y la que podía aprovechar del alumbrado público, en resumen muy mala iluminación por lo cual la sensibilidad iso tuvo que ser aumentada a niveles que ni me gusta ni acostumbro usar .
Eso sí , lo más importante es hacer la foto , con las condiciones y el equipo que tengas. Pero incluso lo más importante de todo es poder conectar con las personas.
Para algunos podrá ser un gran acto de fé, para otros una muestra de fanatismo religioso. Yo no estoy aquí ni estuve allí para juzgar a nadie pero creo que después de ver estas y otras escenas soy un mejor fotógrafo y una mejor persona.
