Actually, there are a few options for cleaning staff... Might just be:

• A) Other redeemed souls who enjoy that kind of work and love to serve?
• B) Messengers, a.k.a. "angels," created for service
• C) Automatons - i.e. robots, more or less like humanly created versions of B)

FYI, I do believe that "those who were destined for a more onerous destination" actually are justly punished during the final judgement and ultimately put out of their misery by being totally consumed. One of these days (years?) I hope to write some posts explaining that biblical, but not widely held, viewpoint.

That Sci-Fi story sounds quite intriguing... Do you recall author or title? Somehow though different, it brings "The Practice Effect" to mind...
