Oh wow think about how a little story can bring back old memories! Farmers always had a tough life, older generations had to work a lot to have a decent life.
I am sure that the drink your grandmother made was very good as it was also charged with emotional flavour as well.
I have a similar memory but with potatoes....my grandmother who lived in the countryside used to make a dish with small round potatoes which were boiled and then fried with parsley. We served those mini potatoes with polenta and freshly boiled eggs. I still remember how happy I was to have that comfort food in the countryside...I often find myself missing that especialy because she is no longer here and she passed away before I was able to even see her....
I think that a certain food, taste, aroma can carry us away in a special corner of our brain where we still hold on to those fond memories
