Garry's Mod is a game I've been playing for quite some time. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the first game I ever bought on Steam- from what I can find, it was Christmas in 2010 (technically, it came with Counter Strike: Source, so I suppose they're tied for first). (interesting side note- I got Minecraft on the first day of the beta release, which was just 15 days before I got Gmod. Must have been a good Christmas for me...)
My brother was the one who introduced the game to me. He basically said it was a physics sandbox, which at the time was a fairly new idea to me. I remember spending a lot of time trying to build rockets- I would spawn in the big, rusty metal tower prop, and put a thruster on each of the four legs, a seat on the top, and try to fly it. Needless to say, this didn't accomplish much- it seldom flew straight, and even if it did, it only took a few seconds to hit the skybox. Eventually, I took a break from the game, since it was harder to use than anticipated.
My next phase was playing with my brother and cousin, and abusing mods. Back then, there was no workshop- you had to go to garrysmod.org and find what you wanted on there, then manually put it in your addons folder. I didn't know restraint back then- my addons folder quickly grew to tens of gigabytes, and probably became the single largest thing on my computer- probably bigger than the rest of the steam folder contents combined. There were a lot of fun things- Garry's Bombs, SCars, Wiremod, etc. It was a time of discovery, and lots of messing around.
After that came the Spacebuild phase. Spacebuild basically adds a bunch of spaceship parts, maps with a bunch of planets, resources that you'd need to survive in the space between them (like oxygen), and other stuff like that. My brother was never really into this, so it was mostly just my cousin and I. Looking back, we never really did anything though. We'd spend an hour building little space probes, using hoverballs, thrusters and cameras, then fly them to a bunch of planets and act like we didn't already know what to expect (because let's be honest, there were/are only 3 or 4 good Spacebuild maps, and they're all pretty similar (though I have to give a shout out to sb_omen_v2 for actually having something of a story)).
The next phase (and the last real one- though I have started playing a bit again lately, mostly for TTT) was DarkRP. I think it was just me at first- I would join one server, play the pet role, and just hide places. Eventually I got my brother in on it, and later my cousin, and we had a lot of great times. For a while, we would all play drug dealers, and have a store called Drugs R Us (no points for getting the reference)- surprisingly, the only time the police ever caught on, it was for a money printing business we had going on the side, not for the drugs. Later, the server descended into chaos- mass murder on the streets, with ninjas jumping from building to building- so we locked ourselves in a room and put on a radio show. I don't remember which servers these events were on- we had to switch, as I was perma-banned from one for arresting a (very obviously young) admin for abusing his powers.
I can still remember the day DarkRP died for us though. Once again, the streets were full of people RDMing (short for "random death match", or basically, killing someone without roleplay reasons- usually it's a kickable offence, but when too many people are doing it, nobody bothers). The police had built a wall across the middle of town, and you had to be searched to get to the other side. We spent a while locked in a house we'd bought, trying to find a way to have fun (we resorted to watching YouTube on an in-game screen for a while), then eventually went outside. The next couple minutes were spent going across the wall and getting spontaneously shot by cops who didn't realise we'd crossed legally, which was good for a laugh but got old very quickly. I'm sure we did play once or twice after this, but it was clear for everyone that it wasn't the same any more.
