I've spent the past hour or so (along with some time last night) playing with Gimp Paint Studio. So far, I've not made much, but I've decided to share a sketch of a mountain.
It's probably not all that impressive- as I said, it's just a sketch. The goal is that I'll play around with different brushes and effects until I make what I can call a finished product.
There is an issue with this- honestly, I found Gimp Paint Studio a little... underwhelming. I'm not sure what exactly I expected from it- I was hoping it would add a variety of more realistic brushes to better emulate paint, however that would happen. What I found instead is that it just adds brushes (a lot of them, admittedly) and presets. They're not bad, and I'm sure they're better than what default Gimp has to offer, but they didn't live up to my hopes.
Now, I'll be honest- painting has never been my thing. I'm a fan of drawing with pencil, as I'm sure I've mentioned before, but I've always struggled to get paint the way I want it. It may well be that I'm just not utilising the tools in GPS to the best of their ability. That's why I'm doing this mountain project- it will give me a chance to familiarise myself with the tools, to learn how to paint digitally, and form a better opinion about the content GPS adds. Plus, if all goes well, I'll have a nice picture to share (and if not, maybe I'll have a rant!). I might try some simpler warm-ups too- as I learned in my Matterhorn comic (and re-learned today), mountains aren't the simplest thing to draw.
