Today, I'll be talking about Bionicles.
If you don't already know, Bionicles are an old line of children's toys, originally launched in 2000/2001 by Lego. Ever since I was young (pretty much as far back as I can remember), both my brother and I were big fans, and over the years we accumulated a rather large bucket of anything from full characters to individual bits and pieces.
For a children's toy line, Bionicles had a really complex and interesting story, which was told by flash games, movies, books and more. We were specifically fans of the earlier generations- not long after Metru Nui came out, we started to lose interest. It's the usual problem with things like this- a plot can very quickly go from having rich lore to being a bit convoluted, and the ideas gradually become less and less original. It's hard to pick my favourite point in time, in terms of the story- I quite like the original Toa (before they became Toa Nuva), both with the Bohrok and the Rahi, but at the same time, the Rahkshi are possibly my favourite thing in the Bionicle universe.
We used to play quite a bit of the games when I was younger. My mom still remembers playing Mata Nui Online Game 2 with me while my brother was at school- we would spend all day collecting shells- and I remember times playing a 3D Bionicle game at a hotel when my cousin was out visiting us. I remember other flash games too- specifically, there was one that was a 2D turn-based combat game, where you play as Matoran fighting against Rahi, but my brother doesn't seem to remember it (for the record, it's entirely possible that this is part of one of the Mata Nui Online Games).
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before here- I get the feeling I have, but I can't find it in any past blogs. Basically, some of my favourite colours are actually defined by Bionicle. Specifically, my favourite shades of red, green, blue and brown are the colours found on Rahkshi (if not others- I would assume they're the same, but I'm uncertain. Plus, Rahkshi plastic is the specific texture I like those colours in, which is probably a really weird thing to say, but it's true).
Anyways, that's gonna be it for today- hopefully you enjoyed this post! If you ever had any Bionicles, or were a fan of the series, let me know what your favourite character was (or if you can't choose, at least your favourite era).
