VAGINAL YEAST INFECTION

Hi friends, I decided to write about this as a result of a friend who is suffering from this condition. Quite a lot of young people are not aware of a health condition as critical as this,while some who do ,don't have accurate and adequate information about it. Worse still, there are those who feel it's a girls thing, well I am sorry to burst your bubbles, the yeast infection is applicable to both male and female.

• WHAT IS YEAST INFECTION?

This infection is caused by a fungus called "Candida". It is usually characterized by soreness, itching,burning,pain during intercourse or urination. To girls in particular, one would have vaginal discharges which are cheesy white in color. However, females are more susceptible to this infection than guys are.
Research has it that the Yeast infection,also known as vaginal candidiasis or vulvovaginal candidiasis(vvc) happens to 3 out of 4 women in their lifetime. Most women experience it at least two times.

• SYMPTOMS

• Rash
• Itching,burning, irritation of the vagina or vvulva,which is the tissue around the vagina.
• Pain or sorenes in the vagina or vaginal opening.
• Vaginal burning with intercourse or urination.
• Discharge of thick ,white ,odorless substance that resembles cottage cheese or watery discharge.

• CAUSES

Common yeast infection are caused by the yeast specie called Candida albicans ,but other specie of Candida can also cause the infection, however they all have different treatments.
A balanced level of yeast and bacteria are present in a woman's vagina but disturbances in this balance can lead to a development of this infection.
The bacteria Lactobacillus creates an environment that does encourage yeast overgrowth, but if yeast becomes dominant, then there will be symptoms of yeast infection.

Note: Yeast infection is not a Sexualky Transmitted Infection (STI's) but they can spread through oral-genital contact or sexual intercourse. They are very common to women who are sexually active.

More so, there are certain factors that also increase the risk of this infection, such as:

• Pregnancy.
• Uncontrolled diabetics.
• Use of hormonal contraceptives or contrace device.
• Use of Antibiotics or Corticosteroid or both.
• Being Immune compromised.
• Poor diet and lack of sleep.

• TREATMENT

The treatment of the Yeast Infection is dependent on if it has gotten to the Complicated or Uncomplicated stage.

• Uncomplicated Yeast Infection

This stage of the yeast infection can be treated in two ways,either by Direct vaginal therapy or oral treatment.In treating an uncomplicated yeast infection, a short-course of vaginal therapy is quite sufficient.

• Complicated Yeast Infection

At this stage of the Infection, the treatment will entail the use of long-course vaginal therapy or multi-dose oral formulations. Moreso, at this point it is important to keep in contact with the doctor for adequate supervision and treatment.

• PREVENTION

Since there is established way or method to prevent a Candida infection, certain steps and actions should be undertaken to reduce the risk of developing a vaginal yeast infection.
Women who are prone to this infection are advised to:

• Eat healthy and varied diets
• Wear loose fitting pants or skirts
• Avoid douching.
• Not to use feminine deodorant or deodorant pads or tampons.
• Avoid tight underwear and pantyhose.
• Avoid hot tubs and hot baths.
• To change wet clothes promptly, especially bathing suits.
• Wash at high temperature.
