Cabinett of Dr Caligari, why? Because it’s among the best silent films ever made, it has beautiful impressionistic landscapes and is just a beauty in storytelling.
Night of the Hunter, why? Because it was one of the greatest noirs of its time and overall just a terrific film with messages that are still resonating to this day
2001 a space oddysey, why? Probably the film that made people take sci fi more seriously.
Rear Window, why? Just a perfect example of how storytelling isn’t what you tell but HOW you tell it.
Persona, a highly experimental film that pushed the envelope forward in regards to what you could do in film and the ideas it can portray. Its been called the iceberg of film analysis.
Mulholland Drive, why? Highly influential, a complete surrealist nightmare that is delightful to see, completely changed a lot of things.
Bicycle Thieves, why? One of the best films from a cinematic movement that has been arguably foundational to the craft.
And lastly,
Tokyo Story, because I think it’s a masterful exercise in family drama.
