It can become quite hard when parents make up excuses for thier children instead of facing the issues.
We have children in our classroom who makes excuses for their child's behavior all the time.
We have at times a child will bite or scratch another child. Then we also have the hitting, pushing or kicking another child. We do incident reports and the parents have to sign them when they pick their child up to go home.
When you address the parent of the child hurting the other child makes excuses for their child or blames it on the child that got hurt.
Example: A child leave the center they are playing in and runs to another center and kicks another child. The parent of the child that ran over and kick the other child said. "You shouldn't let them play in the same center." When you explain that it is written on the incident report that they were not playing in the center and that your child left his center and ran over and kicked the other child and ran back to his own center. Or they will say "my child would never do that." Then there s always "that never happened your just picking on my child."
Instead of making excuses for their child they should be talking to their child about their behavior. I do use a behavior chart and for hitting, kicking or hurting another child they go down 2 spaces. This is a color chart and each color represents a behavior. Which can cause other problems in its self.
Parent try to tell the teacher what color their child should be on and want you to change it in their binder. I don't play that game and the parents know it. And I don't change the color for their child because they say so.
