Ground hog day in the VPK classroom.
Ground hog day is Febuary 2nd in the USA. It is the day everyone wants to know if the ground hog see's his shadow. If he see's his shadow it means 6 more weeks until spring. If he don't see his shadow it means 6 more weeks of winter. Personally it is the same thing just a different way of saying 6 weeks until spring.
This gives me the chance to teach the children about ground hogs. What kind of animal are they, what they eat and where they live. It also is a opening to teach about shadows. How a shadow is made and the effect the sun has on a object to make the shadow and what causes the shadow to sometimes be bigger or smaller.
To teach about shadows we can take a walk outside and look for shadows and see if the shadow looks bigger or smaller than the object.
We can also have the children draw a ground hog and it's shadow or what they think their shadow would look like.
