Data is a competitive industry crowded with corporations, data collectors, and blockchain start-ups. It’s becoming a difficult industry for start-ups. Opiria is proposing a new idea and that’s letting people sell their own personal data. This new marketplace like Opiria will face a lot of competition.

Corporations

Opiria is taking power away from the companies with the largest silos of personal data. This targets companies like Google whose data are the main source of its money. If Opiria wants to change the current personal data market, it is going to be a major threat to a number of major corporations. This is going to be a difficult battle as large corporations would not be willing to let their position go with such ease. However, their revenue source is reliant on other corporations who should welcome a cheaper source of data.

Data Collectors

If Opiria can successfully launch its marketplace, data collectors’ days are likely numbered. Data collectors gather data in any way possible and then sell it to other companies. They take advantage of companies’ inability to directly access personal data from the people. If Opiria can provide a link for companies to buy personal data from people, data collectors have no purpose.

Start-Ups

There are many start-ups involved in the data industry. This market is large and wide as companies need a lot of data and need a diversity in data type and source. New start-ups just approach a data category that is not currently being targeted by other start-ups. Start-ups making centralized data products are facing a threat as blockchain start-ups are creating data products that are more secure and decentralized. Opiria itself falls in this category as it is shifting from a centralized data product to a decentralized data product. There is a lot of competition here but Opiria is one of the first to switch over to the decentralized side and this should be advantageous.
