Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I'm getting my latest Weekend fun posted up! It was our sons birthday party this weekend, I can't believe that the little man is already several years old! :(

Pallet Project

This was a lot of fun! My wife (ssiena@ssiena) is really good at finding things to do and make on Pinterest, as many people are. I know there's a lot of good stuff on Pinterest that I've seen so I can't really say it's more focused towards women since I enjoy it a lot as well!

So the concept here was to make a wooden shipping pallet themed table. Kind of like how you see shipping areas for fishing where they have pallets and the nets strewn across them. I don't know if I've seen this in actual practice or more just in pictures of the iconic look of an area where they do fishing, but it still looks really cool!

So I picked up the wooden pallets. My wife is one hell of a bargain shopper and she often gets things completely free. What do you think we did to get the pallets? Didn't pay a nickel! There's apparently a lot of businesses that do shipping that put the pallets out for free for anyone to take. Scored some for us!

As you can see, the little man is under there having fun, building the floor of a garage I think it was. He was excited to get to do work with me so it was a definite win there. What I was doing here is just making sure the pallets would stay together and didn't look foolish when they were on the table. Thankfully it worked out!

One of the great things about this project here is I didn't spend any money on it.

I first had to make sure the table was level on the ground. Thankfully I've got a 4 foot level and I saw that it was off a fair amount. I grabbed some scrap boards from the wood pile and buried them under the front two legs as well as the back two legs. Additionally, I put a board along the wall once I had an idea I would be needing to brace it somehow.

The little chunks of wood holding it together were salvaged from the wood pile on the other side of the yard, that were slated for tossing in the trash. I stacked them up and bolted them together.

I then made sure that I had some support behind it, bracing it against the stone wall on the lake side. This turned out to work really well to give it strength! It was pretty windy and when I was working on it all, I stood one of the pallets upright and it blew over in the wind. We were really happy when we came there the following day to find that the pallets, once it was all completed, didn't blow over and didn't take the table with it!

It was pretty scary screwing the pieces of wood in the back there, since I was inches away from an 8 foot fall to the very shallow water below lol

Once I secured them all and screwed the chunks to the sides, I put the additional pallet on top of the table. When I did it originally, I wasn't sure if the pallet would go ontop of the table or if it would go in front but it was way too big to go in front. On top it is!

Wife Decorates

So now that I had my component done, it was time for the wife to decorate! She had a really great idea in mind and I think she executed it incredibly well. The small things like the little boat there to hold the cupcakes, and the neeting on the back where we hung the happy birthday sign were great. I think the pallet look came out really cool, how about you?

This was the little mans cake. It's hard to see but it says "OFishally four" on it. I think the cake lady did an awesome job putting this together! The look of the fish and all that was great!

To the left of the cake there, another really cool thing my wife put together were little fish cups. It's gummy worms inside a little cup of crushed up oreo cookie without the filling. She really did great with finding these cool little things!

The little boat here was a great find. Putting the cupcakes in it plus the fishing poles was hilarious. Everyone at the party loved it! The kids devoured a couple of the cupcakes themselves, so it was a total win there.
