First Art and Writing Assignment

I haven't been as active in the Edders community as I would like to be, given the things that I've been working on with the little man over the past several weeks and months but I thought of one group and one group only to post the art project that the little man recently did!

We are home schooling the little man full time now, instead of just doing an after school program twice a week. What that means is that we are a lot more active in the early school things than we were before now. It's both good and bad! Lol. It's good because we can get the little man into more school things like reading, in the coming year or so. We were able to sign up for this decent homeschool online program which I'm not a huge fan of but we take what we can with some things.

What the school does though is give us curriculum that we need to keep track of. This is good because it helps us get to where we need to be without having to do a whole lot of debate on some things where we don't know how to deliver something that we need to. The program has had a few interesting assignments and one of them here is a cool one for counting, writing and getting outside, which are all important to the little tykes!

The assignment was to go outside and get 5 items. You need to get 1 of something, 2 of something else and so on until you have 5 of something and everything between. This wasn't too difficult of an assignment for this duo though! The kid knows more about the local plants than I did when I was his age lol.

One of the things that I really loved was that he was into it! He is a bit of a tricky kid to homeschool, he's got so much energy that it gets challenging to properly teach him. He's jumping all around and just going nuts, which I don't blame the little dude. School is tough to do all day! Thankfully this assignment was for school and it got him outside, both things which were a win. We decided to pick some cool things, not the run-of-the-mill pebbles and other easy stuff you find anywhere. We went all out! Lol. I was glad that when he and I were out fishing, we found a blueberry bush with a few late-season berries. That gave us a shot to grab some blueberry leaves!

We then got some other cool things like some sumac leaves, berries and the pine cones. Not realizing it, I was proud of the little dude for doing such a good job writing pine cones! His writing schools are certainly in the early stages but that was his longest word yet. He used to only be able to write letters if we put the tracing under it and he would trace them.

With this assignment, I experimented and challenged him a little bit! I put the words I wanted him to write down on the left side of the page. I also glued the items down to the page and I made him draw his own version of the item we grabbed as well as write out the letters and words that I wrote on the side of the page. He sometimes fights on these types of things but he actually did wonderful at this particular assignment! He didn't fuss too much and did a great job on the letters. I did have to erase 2 or 3 letters but that's to be expected for these early stages for sure.

Overall my wife and I were super proud of the little dude for his completion of the assignment. It was then another great moment for the week when his teacher told us that he did the best out of the class in doing his letters verbally. He knew each of the letter sounds and she said that was exactly what he needed to do, not knowing what the letter is named is fine but the sound is crucial for the early stages of learning to read. We were stoked to hear that! It makes the challenging times when he's butting heads with us (sometimes literally.. lol) on doing something small for the class. Other times he's a little rock star! The joys of homeschooling for sure, but ones that I personally cherish and love to see that with him home with us instead of at a school where he can't celebrate it as much as he can at home.
