I'm about as good at self-assessment as the average person ... not very good. I go through cycles of giving myself too much or not enough credit. It all depends what lenses we are looking at ourselves through today. I'm a good and honest person, but I know at times there is some darkness and more than a share of selfishness in my heart. When we look out into the world, onto those we don't know and don't understand, we have to reflect on how little we can judge them. Fear and the unknown are strong motivators, as well as suspicion of anything that is foreign. As we get older we gain a share of perspective, but we also tend to cling tighter to the familiar, and it gets harder to learn new things, especially about peoples we've never had much of any experience with.
We all need to recognize the presence of darkness in our own hearts and in our views to recognize that and go beyond it. Humanity is one great big face in one great big mirror, if only we had the courage to avoid our own inner demons yelling at us to be constantly wary. Each one of us has trouble forgiving, looking past the sins of others, and getting over that emotional attachment we have to carrying grudges and holding hurt. It's hard to get past. In fact, we often can't get past it, but can only try to psychologically tell ourselves to take the other side, to be objective, and to move on. In a world where we are told so much to trust our feelings, sometimes we have to have faith in a better nature beyond our limited selves and imaginations as well ... for the greater good that's out there somewhere beyond.
