Have you ever realized how many ways there are of avoiding reality? As a saying goes, you wonder if some people even ever knew they were born.
The latest chic escapism fad is meditation. Don’t get me wrong, earnest meditation can have a lot of benefits. But there is this techno 1% trend of wired in executives and venture capitalists that want to meditate for enhancing their mental powers. Or in other words, on the flip side, they are closing off the rest of the world. We have a lot of theories and rationales to justify our inaction, to ignore the injustices of the world, and to propagate the reasons why our path is good and free from bloody hands. But as more and more try to find inner peace and freedom from the chaos of the world (some of which they have created), the more the chaos forms all around them.

As the Guardian article wisely states, “Asian wisdom have been subject to colonisation and commodification since the 18th century”. We have taken an earnest practice to find spiritual purity and sold it as a soothing balm to millionaires and billionaires to ease their cognitive dissonance about the world they manipulate yet detach from. Mindfullness and Capitalism cannot be reconciled, nor can Big Brother and the Buddha. One holds the axe, the other the dove. It is the doublespeak we revel in, such as our fascination to bastardize the word “freedom”. Also stated; “reductions in stress and increases in personal happiness and well-being are much easier to sell than serious questions about injustice, inequity and environmental devastation.” Put in your ear buds, wrap on your blindfold, light up the incense… and empty yourself out from an unjust world.
