Hello, happy day, my loves 🫶🏼 I am happy and a little nostalgic because yesterday was the culmination of an important stage in my life, yesterday was my last shift and last day in the internal medicine service as a medical student. This service accompanied me for 3 years in different stages, first in 4th year, then in 5th and finally in 6th year.
The truth is that this last year has been full of emotions and wonderful people who have crossed our path, such as Dr. Sandra Ramirez Internist who guided us, taught us a little of medicine and life for a month, and then we were in the hands of Dr. Juan Escobar, with his wisdom and knowledge who guided us through a world of internal medicine more interesting and applying in some cases the law of parsimony, where the simplest explanation can be the cause of multiple diseases, in some cases of course.
This year I became more fond of this service, not only for its teachers but also for its patients. I learned to connect a little more with the emotions of my patients, their fears, their desire to be cured and leave the hospital, I saw them scared and serious at the time of the medical review, but I also saw them at 9 o'clock at night laughing and talking about their life stories with other patients around them while I was inspecting on my night shifts. I felt that I saw both sides of the coin, I talked with relatives, I received gifts such as chocolates, arepas, coffee from relatives who felt the need to give me something as a gesture of affection.
I also saw them stressed because of lack of money, and waiting for a helping hand to pay for their medicines. And of course I saw them say goodbye and save our numbers to have us on WhatsApp. Many come from far away, others are local, some passed away, most left on their feet wanting to eat the world. I am left with the academic and human experience, something I will never forget 🫶🏼. Clearly there are many more things to come, I will meet more people but the first patients as a student are not forgotten.
Every day I am more human and more empathetic with people, nobody knows what is hidden behind a happy face, many times the one you least think of in the street has a problem on top of it, let's be kinder and more cooperative. In this service I also got sick a lot, because of Helicobacter Pylori and I was in a lot of pain for a week going to the hospital for my work but that never stopped me, pretending to feel well in front of the patients, I got tonsillitis and still with my safety measures I was there.
