This is a response to an article I just read by @stellabelle Is The Internet Racist? Let's Build A Stock Photo Library That Actually Represents The World's People.
I liked it, it was a good article. I have always enjoyed her writing, and I appreciate both the problem and like the take charge approach to a solution.
But... Is The Internet Racist?
I wanted to just do the opposite search first, so I went to unsplash and searched white man. The same type of photos came up as well and some racial misfires as well, including this photo I want to share cause I like it.
Sam Burriss
I also tried typing in racial slurs, I wanted to see. Unsurprisingly, it returned 0 results.
I don't want to be dismissive sounding of racism as a problem that exists, however is it maybe that they are color blind? There's a bit of damned if you do and damned if you don't at times. Google was called racist when an app of theirs mistakenly tagged a black couple as gorillas.
We WANT the technology to work, should it be unforgivable when it makes a mistake that needs correcting?
Regarding Unsplash
I think they really just left skin color as a searchable parameter out. Searching for African man had a lot more results of the sort you were looking for... although I would have liked to see the odd white person there as well. I would be equally disappointed if I proceeded to search for American man and get white dude results.
P.S.: I am way to literal and so was always perplexed by "the internet is racist" as a saying. The internet is a thing, or a program is a program... it isn't capable of racism. Does racism exist on the internet and is it a problem? YES to both and I like conversations about how to solve it.
