When it comes to tradition, I have a high respect for it. Tradition is passed from generation to generation. Our tradition plays a vital role in our lives; it helps to shape our beliefs, customs and culture. Tradition has its way of bringing people together. I am seriously pained that people don’t value or respect tradition anymore. During the days of our forefathers, people respected tradition. Since Christianity came into existence, people have negotiated tradition. You can hardly see a community that still practises tradition.

If we still hold our tradition high, there are some certain things that are happening in our community today that should not be so. Back then, the tradition was so strict that before you took an action, you would check the consequences, and if it was something that was against the tradition, one would withdraw from it.

Tradition is very sweet; it has its own way of bringing people together. Tradition has its rules guiding them, and when you go against the tradition, you will have a price to pay. As well as there being a bad side to tradition, there is also a good side to tradition. Most times this tradition prevents the growth of the community and the people living in the community.

Some traditions prevent innovation in our community; the tradition of the white men will not build anything. My community is among the communities that tradition preventsfrom innovation. According to my father, the white men that came for missionary work wanted to develop my community, but the elders of the community chased them away, and they went to a neighbouring community that welcomed the development they brought to their community. That was how my community missed that golden opportunity. Still now my community is regretting it, but it is now late.

Our forefathers failed to understand that those things are for the betterment of the community. Our tradition shouldn’t prevent innovation. As the world keeps advancing every day, we should open room for innovation.

I strongly believe that our tradition should not hinder innovation. Innovation can never take away our values, culture and belief; rather, it will make it more fun and interesting.

This is my response to the weekly prompts #hiveghana topic tradition.
