It is normal for us humans to experience moments when someone judges us without asking what the problem is. People form opinions based on what they hear and see but always forget that there is always another side of every story. I have experienced this many times, and it taught me one lesson, which is patience and not allowing other people’s opinions to define who I am.

This prompt takes me back to memory lane. There was a time people living on my street assumed that I was so proud that I intentionally ignored them. According to them, I was distancing myself from them, acting as if I were better than them. The judge, I do not know that I have challenges that I am battling with. I had a lot on my mind from family and relationships. I was struggling to find a way to balance my problem so that my problem would not affect people close to me.

You know how difficult moments can be. I was not cheerful; I was not myself. I preferred to stay quiet and spend time alone thinking about the things happening in my life. I was never avoiding anyone, and for one, I have never thought that I am better than anyone. Just that I need so much time to clear my mind, and head for me to regain my peace of mind.

To my greatest surprise, they misinterpreted my silence differently, staying to stop me or come to my place and ask if I am okay or, better still, find out why I am so quiet, but they didn’t; they just concluded that I have changed and am being proud. When I find out of their assumptions, I am so hurt it pains me that people I call my own misunderstood my actions without even asking me what the problem is.

Nothing hurt me the most is that my intentions are different from what they believed. I was busy fighting my battles on my own without involving anyone. All I get in return is being misunderstood. In all, I get to realize one thing: times when you are facing challenges, people on their own will be putting pressure on you simply because they choose to assume instead of asking.

The first time I heard about it, I felt like explaining myself and defending myself about the challenges I am facing. I just want them to know that I am not proud or disrespectful; I take my time, and I think about it, and I realize that acting out of anger will not solve anything.

I told myself that I will handle it calmly; if I have the opportunity to speak with the person, I will explain everything to them. With this experience I felt wiser and hurt. One thing is sure: I can’t control how people respond to my opinions. Secondly, I learned that I don't need to prove myself to anyone from my experience. I learned that I shouldn't be in a hurry to judge people. Of course the experience affected me, but it also helps me to grow.
