The day's most pressing question is: Should inmates serving time in prison be allowed to enjoy the same healthcare services that law-abiding citizens enjoy? Many arguments have been raised concerning what citizens should enjoy. Some people are of the opinion that inasmuch as they are prisoners, they can still enjoy some benefits more, especially when it has to do with their health, because they are prisoners. That doesn't mean they will lose their rights more, especially when it has to do with their health. They are still humans just like every law-abiding citizen, while some are of the opinion that prisoners should not benefit from expensive health care, especially people that were convicted of murder, killing, kidnapping, and so on.
For me, I will suggest that we look into this issue of inmates receiving proper healthcare. Let's look beyond emotions and consider what humanity really means.
To be honest, I understand why some people are not happy with the idea of taxpayers funding healthcare for prisoners. The majority of the citizens work very diligently to pay their own medical bills; most of them have to go and borrow money to be able to save the life of a loved one. Some keep postponing treatment because the money isn't there. In a country like mine, government health care is always overcrowded, and they don't get access to the essential medicines. Of a truth, this can be very painful. Tell me why a convict is receiving medical treatment funded by the public. It is unfair because some of these people can't even pay for their medical treatment.
Well, there are things we should also consider while arguing these prisoners' freedom has been taken from them by the government; they can be able to seek medical care if need be. They are now under custody of the government; in this case, the government should take full responsibility when it comes to their health. They are prisoners, but they are still human beings. They are just at the correction center to serve punishment for their offense; that does not mean they should be denied their human rights. The right to medical treatment is one of them for me. It is bad that an inmate will die in prison while there is treatment for the illness.
When it comes to prisoners' health, it should not be joked with because they live in an enclosed environment where there are many people; if diseases and illnesses are ignored, they will spread among the inmates, and there is a possibility that the workers in the prison will be affected. If there is any place that treatment should not be ignored, it is prison.
These prisoners should have access to essential healthcare such as medical examination and emergency treatment and not be of the opinion that they should receive expensive but basic treatment. One of the reasons that they should be given proper treatment is because one day they will return to society; if they are left untreated, we, the law-abiding citizens, are not safe.
In all, the government should be transparent and accountable; the general public needs to know that their funds are used responsibly. Prisoners should receive basic health care.
What is your thought on this prompt? Do you think that prisoners should be given the same health care as law-abiding citizens? Or should they receive only basic treatment? Drop your thoughts in my comment section.
