Can you be a suburban homesteader, heck yeah. I just love preserving my own foods and you can do this in an apartment if you wish to. I'm trying to grow foods in my tiny front garden as it's the only part of my garden that has enough sun shine. At the moment my mandarin trees are loaded with fruits and boy are they good. The variety I have has no pips and are so sweet to eat. We are sill harvesting carrots from one of the beds and you can't imagine how good they taste. I used to knit a lot but my hands are too sore now. We just bought an acre in a lovely country town near the ocean and can't wait to build there. We will just need to wait till hubby retires and in the meantime we can get a few trees established. We are removing the smaller trees from the house we live in now and replanting them onto the larger block. It's winter here in Australia now so it's the perfect time to get them into the ground. I'm still deciding on the kind of shade trees to be planted as they can't take a long time to grow and need to be loose their leave during winter time. Gosh I so wish that we could build now but in a way it gives us time to get our ideas right. The kitchen will be a priority for me as it will have a massive pantryroom coming off the garage so that we can bring the food shopping easily in there and stack the shelves. I have a bedroom in my house where I've lived for the past 40 years that I've turned into a pantryroom and will share the photos here. If your a homesteader storage is key for all the produce you'll preserve weather it's canning or dehydrating and when you see your efforts on the pantry shelf you will feel so proud of yourselves. Being in the suburbs having farm animals for me isn't possible but if you have the space raising animals for your own food is so cool.
