"The Watching Zone"
There is a place less than two blocks from my house that I have known since I was a child and that, for a long time, simply formed part of the landscape. It is located on the boundary between my neighborhood and another, considerably less urban area, near a creek and a church. There are large containers there, filled with concrete and surrounded by vegetation, with an inscription that has always caught my attention: “MONITORED AREA.” When I was a child, I did not understand what it meant or why they had been placed precisely there. Over the years, I heard stories related to that area, and that phrase began to take on a different meaning for me. Disappearances, people who had experienced strange things, stories about presences, places where some people preferred not to stay too long. Nothing that I could verify, of course. But neither was it a story I had heard only once.
I am agnostic, so I do not need to decide beforehand what explanation there is for all of this. In fact, part of my interest lies precisely in not doing so. I have been to that area several times, and I have had sensations that are difficult to explain, although a personal feeling does not prove absolutely anything. What I find more unsettling has happened with other people. On some occasions, I have been accompanied by people who did not previously know the history of the place and who, after being there, have told me that they felt something strange. I had not told them anything beforehand. I was not asking them whether they believed in ghosts. They simply made some comment about the atmosphere, about feeling uncomfortable, or about a sensation they could not explain. When something like that happens once, I can perfectly well attribute it to coincidence. When you hear similar accounts from people who have no connection to one another, you begin to pay a little more attention.
The history of the place does not exactly help clear up the doubts, either. Before San Diego grew into an urban municipality, this area had a completely different configuration. Near the creek, there was a reference to an ancient Indigenous cemetery, and later a church was built nearby. As the city grew, all of this became surrounded by streets, homes, and businesses. People continued living there, and the city continued expanding. But certain stories remained. It is also possible that some real events were transformed through oral transmission. A crime, a disappearance, an accident, or any unclear episode can acquire new details after many years. In the past, there were not the current possibilities for consulting records, cross-checking dates, or quickly reconstructing what happened. A story could circulate for decades without anyone having enough tools to verify it.
What is curious is that the place is not isolated at all. There is activity, homes, vehicles, and people constantly passing by. That is precisely why it interests me more. We are not talking about an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere or a place that no one approaches. It is an ordinary area, completely integrated into the neighborhood. And yet it still retains that reputation. Some people talk about energy. Others mention disappearances. Some simply say that they feel something there that they cannot identify. I cannot confirm any of these things. Nor am I interested in turning a strange experience into a supernatural claim. But when several people describe something similar without knowing the story beforehand, the coincidence remains recorded in my memory. Not as proof, but as a question that is still there.
That is why I still look at those concrete containers every time I pass nearby. “MONITORED AREA” seems like a fairly simple indication, although I have never known exactly what is supposed to be monitored there. Perhaps it all began with a perfectly explainable event that eventually became a local legend. Perhaps the story of the ancient cemetery, the church, and the later accounts became intertwined with the growth of the city until they produced a tradition that no one questions very much. There is also the possibility that some experiences have an explanation that I still do not know. I have no conclusion and, honestly, I do not want to fabricate one either. What interests me is precisely that point at which a story can be folklore, memory, coincidence, or something we still do not know how to explain. And that area, two blocks from my house, remains one of those places that I prefer to observe rather than interpret.
