Wankui Pagoda is located by the Fuhe River in Shigang Village, Linchuan District, Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China. Shigang Village is my aunt's hometown. Whenever we go to see her and her family, we will go to visit Wankui Pagoda.
Founded in 1610, it has a history of more than 400 years. According to a myth, during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, there was a squid in the local area. The head of the squid was in the east of the river and the tail was in the west of the river. The squid turned over every five years. When the squid turned over, Shigang Village would be a sea. An immortal passed by and took pity on the suffering of the villagers, telling them that as long as a pagoda was built to pin the squid down, it would not be able to turn over, and the whole village would be free from the danger of flooding. So, people raised money to build Wankui Pagoda.
Wankui Pagoda has six sides, and the waist of the six sides is about 32 meters long. It has a total of seven floors, about 42 meters high. The bottom is made of kenaf stone, and the body is made of blue bricks. The top of it is a circle inlaid with copper sheets. There are six arched doors between the floors. There are two spiral steps inside, one on the left and one on the right, all the way to the fifth floor . above the fifth floor are attics, which are used for people to climb up and overlook the Fu River and the scenery.
Wankuita is precious not only because of its long history, but also because of its unique architectural style. Its masonry structure, delicate and flexible cornices, and spiral staircases all amaze people. What's especially amazing is that if two people set off at the same time, one goes up from the bottom and the other goes down from the top , they will never meet.
Wankuita was repaired twice, once in the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty and once in 2006. What people see now is what it looked like after it was repaired in 2006.
Due to its long disrepair, Wankui Pagoda was tilted, the tower body had cracks everywhere from the top , the bricks collapsed, all the wooden buildings and floors in the heart of the tower were missing, and most of the first to fourth wooden floors were destroyed. With the help of people from all walks of life and the support of the local government, the reconstruction was officially started in February 2006, and the maintenance was completed and a monument was erected in August 2006. This repair not only restored the original appearance of Wankuita, but also made various anticorrosion and reinforcement and installed lightning protection devices.
Climbing up Wankui Tower and looking into the distance, the sparkling Fu River, the scattered villages, and the endless fields make people feel relaxed and happy. The world is so beautiful and there is nothing to worry about .
