Well, the Yang Gang has to fill is UBI coffers somehow, tax what you eat, what you drink, what you smoke, how you travel. Tax is the answer to everything lol! I honestly don't know how the world survived this long without taxes compared to living with taxes! I'm really no fan of taxes in general because I believe in market forces being self-regulating.
So you tax the meat and pass on the cost to the consumer, in turn less demand for meat, more job loss in that industry and the market shrinks sure I get that but what if people aren't going to change their habits and pay that extra because they want meat and the industry runs the same and the government makes extra cash on that, what do they plan to do with the cash to tip the balance in the favour of less meat?
I doubt much. Taxing something just seems like the "easy" solution for everything! I've yet to see it actually help adjust an economy in any which way, it's just an artificial markup to help extract more from the consumers/value creators.
Sure we have climate change and the research is available but unless I see them do something like subsidising alternative products/farming creating jobs in an alternative industry and really making a push for adjuting the value chain, then its nothing but a blatant cash grab.
RE: [EP234] - How would you feel about a tax on beef?
