Hey Jess-markters

A few years ago I was a young, handsome bright-eyed lad who just got a fresh marketing degree I never really wanted but my parents said It was a good idea. Marketing is a bit of a broad definition and from the look of the people in my classes, I knew it was a catchment course, no one who knew what they wanted to do ended up in marketing.

Anyway, I thought how bad could this profession be? I'd write copy for newspaper ads and scripts for radio which is what I was taught. Then I got into the real world and digital was starting to pick up and there was this thing called digital marketing and well any tom dick and harriet could get into it, there were no real courses or rules you just had to get traffic.

Dammed if you do and dammed if you don't

Being a marketer is a self-less job when things are going well you're basically invincible no one talks to you, emails you, calls you and even knows you exist. That's how you know you doing a good job, the quiet reinforcement of complete radio silence from colleagues is an indication of good performance.

Unfortunately, we're all human and you're going to fuck up from time to time and there's nothing like a good old "I'm mortified or livid" because of a spelling mistake or I don't like this content or messaging to bring you back down from your perch.

You then have to jump in with your soft skills and handle the situation before you can go back to radio silence. Then, of course, your one mistake means you need to be micromanaged because well you can't be trusted you're a missing comma away from being completely useless at your job.

Everyone is a marketer

Now that everyone is a marketer and you're just a shit for brains specialist of a filed everyone can do with their eyes closed you need to follow direct instructions that often do not work because well most people are completely disconnected from how digital marketing works, they think they know but really they don't.

This is where you gotta be pretty careful, do everything to the T and get all evidence that the direction never came from you only the execution. Execute to your best, present back results that failed dismally and then you can go back to your merry little day of working in silence and getting results.

That's basically a snippet of a digital marketers day, it's not the worst job in the world, but it's by no means glamorous, it's a bit of a grind fest but if you know what you're doing you can sell your traffic creation skills anywhere in the world which is nice.

Have your say

What's the honest depiction of your job? Share it with me, I'd love a sad lol story
