English Version

Greetings, friends of holos-lotus@holos-lotus. My daughter lilianajimenez@lilianajimenez is inviting us to write about a very lively topic, such as music and dance. This is not the first time I write about it, I love it, because I am very grateful for everything it has brought to my life; but this time I am going to focus on dance, because I think I have told you less about this aspect.

Dancing in my life began with my first participation in school, in the so-called cultural events. I was already in sixth grade when I was incorporated into the Christmas group, and this involved, in addition to singing, a type of repetitive and monotonous movement, I suppose it was the choreography, these pieces did not have many moving parts, as to think of something very elaborate.

I suppose it was also, more or less at that age, that I started to go to the dance parties that the aunts held at my grandmother's house (when they started early). At that time, every party had its usual dance. The most popular were La Billos Caracas Boys and Los Mel贸dicos, which were orchestras whose music invited movement, in addition to Damiron's Piano Merengue, which could not be missed.

I remember that the first steps were just moving each foot alternately from left to right and from right to left. "The girl is dancing now," I heard my father say. I wonder now what that confirmation meant to him. It gave me confidence. His judgments were always severe, and on that occasion I didn't feel much apprehension.

Somehow I learned the steps and movements for the music of that time. Going to a party meant waiting for a male figure to ask me to dance. A kind of code began, not studied at all, but which showed whether or not one was willing to go out. It was not elegant to leave the gentleman with one's hand outstretched and it was also terrible if no one asked one to dance. Now I know that this process was also uncomfortable for the young man. There was shyness in some, fear of rejection, and a riot of emotions and hormones.

The girls (we always went in groups) studied the environment first, we asked ourselves, in a low voice, if we didn't like someone, because they smelled bad or constantly stepped on our feet. Going out to dance for the first time was a challenge for everyone. If you were not invited again or if your second invitation was not accepted, it meant that something had happened, something had not gone as expected. Finding someone to dance well with and staying with for as long as possible lowered the tension of the day. The initial trance had already passed. Many dance couples would get in tune before the meeting, which was positive and negative at the same time, because if a good dancer appeared on the dance floor, there would be no chance of dancing with him.

And the fact is that dancing with the person who knows how to do it is an extraordinary exercise. Achieving that coupling in the turns, the steps, and being able to move around the room with ease is when you get the true benefits of this activity. Sometimes it happened that the other person seemed to lean their body against yours, so you had to keep distance, putting your arm in as a lever.

Boleros were danced cheek to cheek and if the person had acne on their face, it created discomfort. The best thing was to look at the floor or entertain yourself by picking some lint off your clothes, without making eye contact, when you didn't feel like dancing: because you were tired, because your shoes were too tight, or because the candidates danced too badly.

Times have changed, now there is more talk at meetings, but those who like dancing always find a way to get in.

There's nothing better than dancing with someone you have a sentimental connection with, because feet go by themselves while souls nest.

Thank you for your kind reading.
