A few days ago I received this gift of wisdom that made me think. Read this: "We all go through bad times, and not everyone acts the same."
Life is full of good times and bad times. Some people will feel that the former were more common, but for others, the disastrous ones were the most abundant. Can you imagine if everyone who has had unpleasant experiences took on the behavior of taking out the pain they've suffered on others? Living would be a risk.
Some of us have a tendency to prioritize the bad things that happen to us and the people who do wrong. We waste a lot of energy wrapped in resentment. From there, we make decisions for the future. It makes sense because it's part of learning. Taking care of ourselves is also a duty, but let's review that.
Learning to give weight to positive experiences is important; it's about finding balance. I don't approve of the idea of remaining stuck in unpleasantness. It's necessary to get out of it, and to do so, I must seek the necessary measures to avoid greater evils.
It's good to know that it's a matter of choice. How do we behave in the face of the consequences that the bad actions we receive can leave behind? We can spend our entire lives remembering those incidents, saying there are bad people in the world who cause harm, reliving every scene, every pain.
Some people act accordingly, react, and proceed by trying to make the aggressor pay, or worse, those who have nothing to do with it. Persisting in trying to hurt another person for the bad things they've received at some point is what is called revenge.
We can forgive, try to forget, or at least not keep that in mind every day, and not guide our behavior with retaliation. Just because you've suffered mistreatment, abuse, a difficult childhood, or other calamities doesn't necessarily mean your response to others should include scowls, contempt, anger, and other displays of anger.
The way you treat others is always a choice; others are not responsible for the harm you've received at some point. Every person requires considerate and courteous treatment. Not everyone who has been wronged treats others with malicious intent, and while someone has been able to recover and move on, those who don't heal and prefer to show their most hostile side require help. But we are not obligated to endure what can become disrespect, much less justify it.
I don't think you can erase a regrettable situation overnight; it's about understanding that dumping your anger on someone who has nothing to do with it doesn't solve the problem. The pain will still be there, along with the unpleasant memories. There is personal work to be done to confront what you've experienced and cope with it, as so many people have done.
When it comes to facing painful memories, it's important to understand that there are people who hurt and people who don't, that some people behave in a way that always focuses on those who don't do wrong. It's good to be able to say, "May I not be like that person" or "Thank you for showing me that side of you I don't want to have."
Is it possible to find a person in life who has never experienced anything bad? I don't think so, but I do know that there are many people who can make the best of every situation and not repeat it in their workplaces, in their surroundings, in their daily lives—anything that might affect others—that's already great behavior.
I frequently see people who say, "He's like this because he was abused a lot as a child," or "because he was abandoned," or "because he wasn't given the opportunity to prepare himself," and so on, as a way of justifying that attitude. A kind of humanitarian empathy toward that person who acts badly.
If we remember that not everyone acts this way, we can think that this individual could also change and behave more humanely toward others and their loved ones. Let's not justify the irrational.
