Greetings friends lovers of architectural gems! Today I am pleased to share with you the review of a building that is an icon of the capital city of the state of Táchira, in Venezuela, I am talking about the Civic Center of San Cristóbal.

A few days ago I had to stop by an office that I did not know where it was, when I asked for the address they told me it was on the seventh floor of the Civic Center, so I took the opportunity to take some pictures to share.

The civic center is a group of offices, stores, restaurants and the Plaza Bolivar where the statue of the Liberator Simon Bolivar is located. This place has been a meeting point, reference and supply place since 1986, that is 2 years before my birth, so this building, which occupies 1 full block in the central part of the city, is very important for all the people who live in the state of Táchira.

I remember when I was a child the Civic Center had escalators and at the top were beauty salons, radio stations and offices. By now it no longer has the escalators, only the elevator works. I also saw many disused offices and other premises.

Some time ago I shared with my friend @annafenix in an initiative to compare the city of San Cristobal 40 years ago and now, there I told her about the fire that the building suffered in 2006. Here I leave you that publication so you know a little more about my experience that day of the fire. At present the structure is very deteriorated and they have not repaired any of the damage caused by the flames.

You can still see the 5 floors of the affected tower in total abandonment and that the accident happened more than 16 years ago.

I was 6 years out of the country. When I returned I was very surprised to see that they had changed the statue of the Liberator with his back to the civic center. I guess it looks better in its new place.

Personally this plaza is very important, it has been a meeting point for friends and I remember that time we did an anti-bullfighting protest and we gathered in this place to demand respect for animals.

From the window of the seventh floor where I was, I was able to take some pictures and you can see the informal sales of clothes and food around the Civic Center. You can also see the entrance to the basement that functions as a huge parking lot.

You can also see the entrance to the Boulevard of handicrafts where we can get handmade items such as jewelry, crochet coats, leather shoes, desserts and ice cream, among others.

I can assure you that after the COVID-19 pandemic and the strong economic crisis facing Venezuela, the Civic Center seems deserted to me, with many stores closed and some spaces like the fountain in the center of the building are closed, the main restaurant is not working and the stores in the basement are a little scary as they are isolated.

I would like to see the Civic Center restored. Comparing the structure to years ago (I took the picture from a local digital newspaper) I would like to see this piece of architecture shine again and guarantee the economy of all the families that depend on this space for their businesses. At the same time, preserve this historic building that is over 30 years old and worth preserving.

Visitemos el Centro Cívico de la ciudad de San Cristóbal

¡Saludos amigos amantes de las joyas arquitectónicas! Hoy me complace compartir con ustedes la reseña de un edificio que es ícono de la ciudad capital del estado Táchira, en Venezuela, les hablo del centro cívico de San Cristóbal.

Hace unos días tuve que pasar por una oficina que no sabía donde quedaba, cuando pedí la dirección me dijeron que era en el séptimo piso del Centro Cívico, así que aproveché la oportunidad de tomar algunas fotografías para compartirlas.

El centro cívico es un conjunto de oficinas, tiendas, restaurantes y la Plaza Bolívar dónde está la estatua del Libertador Simón Bolívar. Este lugar ha sido punto de encuentro, referencia y lugar de abastecimiento desde el año 1986, es decir 2 años antes de mi nacimiento, por lo que este edificio, que ocupa 1 manzana completa en el casco central de la ciudad, es muy importante para todas las personas que vivimos en el estado Táchira.

Recuerdo que cuando era niña el Centro Cívico tenía escaleras eléctricas y en la parte superior se encontraban salones de belleza, emisoras de radio y oficinas. Para este momento ya no cuenta con las escaleras eléctricas, funciona solamente el elevador. También pude observar muchas oficinas y locales en desuso.

Hace un tiempo compartí con mi amiga @annafenix en una iniciativa para comparar la ciudad de San Cristóbal hace 40 años y ahora, allí le comenté sobre el incendio que sufrió el edificio en el año 2006. Aquí les dejo esa publicación para que sepan un poco más sobre mi experiencia ese día del incendio. En la actualidad se encuentra muy deteriorada la estructura y no han reparado nada de los daños que causaron las llamas.

Todavía se pueden ver los 5 pisos de la torre afectada en total abandono y eso que el accidente pasó hace más de 16 años.

Estuve 6 años fuera del país. Cuando regresé me sorprendió mucho ver que habían cambiado la estatua del Libertador dandole la espalda al centro cívico. Supongo que en su nuevo lugar luce mejor.

En lo personal esta plaza es muy importante, ha sido un punto de reunión entre amigos y recuerdo esa vez que hicimos una protesta Anti taurina y nos reunimos en este lugar para exigir respeto a los animales.

Desde la ventana del séptimo piso donde me encontraba, pude tomar unas fotografías y se ven las ventas informales de ropa y comida a los alrededores del Centro Cívico. También se ve la entrada del sotano que funciona como un inmenso estacionamiento.

También se ve la entrada del Boulevard de artesanía donde podemos conseguir artículos elaborados manualmente como joyería, abrigos en crochet, zapatos de cuero, postres y helados, entre otros.

Puedo asegurar que después de la pandemia por la COVID-19 y la fuerte crisis económica que enfrenta Venezuela, el Centro Cívico me parece desértico, con muchas tiendas cerradas y algunos espacios como el de la fuente que se encuentra en el centro del edificio están cerrados, el restaurante principal no está funcionando y las tiendas que están en el sotano dan un poco de miedo ya que se encuentran aisladas.

Me gustaría que restauraran el Centro Cívico. Comparando la estructura con años atrás (tomé la fotografía de un diario digital local) me gustaría que esta pieza arquitectónica volviera a brillar y garantizar la economía de todas las familias que dependen de este espacio para sus comercios. Al mismo tiempo, preservar este edificio histórico que tiene más de 30 años y que merece la pena conservar.
